Sufi Somalis have picked up guns to defend themselves against attacks.

CAIRO – Siyad Mohammed Ali, a young Sufi Somali, has never squeezed a trigger before.
But he decided to take up arms to defend himself in the raging violence in the Horn of Africa country.

"We had never told the Shabab how to worship," Ali, who is studying Islamic philosophy, told The New York Times on Sunday, May 24.

"But now we were under attack."

Attacks have been on the rise against Sufis since the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from the country.

As several Sufi scholars were killed and mosques destroyed, Sufi Somalis have picked up guns to fight against Shabab.
