"Happy Memorial Day, Errol!" WTF?!
Edited on Mon May-25-09 07:52 AM by no_hypocrisy
Just heard on The Morning Show hosted by Errol Lewis on NYC's WWRL (show independent and not affiliated with AAR) a caller greeting with "Happy Memorial Day, Errol" and a breezy "You too, man!" by the host.

That makes as much sense as "Happy Good Friday!"

Does anyone remember the symbolism and meaning of this day?

8:51 a.m. ANOTHER caller just greeted Errol Lewis with "Happy Memorial Day" and he let it slide.

Edited on Mon May-25-09 07:59 AM by SoCalDem
and veterans were honored on Armistice day (11-11)
At least that's the way my hometown always honored the days.. We used to go to the cemetery and plant flowers on my grandparents' graves, and put a flag on Uncle Jimmy's grave..

Now they BOTh have taken on a religio-hyper patriotic-nationalistic/militaristic "flavor", and of course the "newsies" don't know how to start ANY day without a "Happy" in fron of it..

One newsette wished everyone a "Happy Tuesday" a few weeks ago..:wtf:

3. It's still like a day for decorating graves where I live. Is it that way elsewhere in the country?

It's mostly the older people who stick to the tradition of honoring the dead on Memorial Day, though. But that's enough to fill the cemeteries with flowers. The young people are too busy getting drunk in the mountains and tearing up the landscape with their ATVs.

Memorial Day was always a big deal for my mom's family, with relatives coming from all over the state to decorate the graves of loved ones buried here and then getting together with family for a nice meal. I always thought it was a nice tradition, and with so many of my mom's relatives having passed on now, decorating graves has fallen mostly on the shoulders of my mom and myself. Maybe that's why I get a little bit offended by the people my age who think it's just a party weekend.

2. Its just another long weekend party day for most people...that is why
I advocate moving the holidays back to their rightful place on the calendar, not the convenient place.
