CIA Briefers Regularly Mislead Hill Intelligence Panels, Ex-Spy Charges

By Jeff Stein | May 26, 2009 5:05 PM |

A former deep-cover CIA operative says the spy agency's congressional briefers routinely shade the truth or hide facts altogether from congressional overseers.

"They mumble, they dissemble, and there's a lot of 'on the one hand . . .'" said the retired official, who spent 25 years as a CIA operations officer but now writes blistering, unauthorized critiques of the spy agency using the pen name "Ishmael Jones."

Jones denounced claims by Speaker Nancy Pelosi that the CIA kept her in the dark about water-boarding terrorist suspects, saying the California Democrat "has been using the interrogation issue as a political tool for years."

But he said the spy agency's congressional briefers are also experts at camouflaging classified programs.

5. Will Porter Goss be prosecuted for lying to Congress?
Give an incompetent liar enough rope ....

Goss in attempting to put that noose on Rep. Nancy Pelosi, seems to have forgotten his own contradictory testimony to Congress. If Goss and Pelosi were briefed about waterboarding, Goss lied to Congress, a crime. Goss' own statements are now evidence implicating himself.

Even competent liars eventually get caught in the web of their own irreconcilable constructions.

...........

Porter Goss blatantly lied to a Congressional Comm.

So, if the Rs want to discuss lying to Congress, and point fingers at Pelosi, let's bring this Catch 22 into the discussion.

......

As Greg Sargent at The Plum Line points out, in his op-ed, Goss didn't say that they were told torture was used, only that "EITs had been developed," and that members of congress should have "understood" that they would be used in the future.

The entire basis of the Republican attacks on Pelosi is that she knew exactly what was going on since 2002. Of course what Pelosi knew and when she knew it was never the point -- but the deflection has worked out beautifully for the GOP.

Bombshell Report Ties Gonzo to Torture, Months before "Authorization
May 20, 2009 - http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/5/20/205756/912

NPR is reporting today that significant new information has emerged per an ACLU FOIA request directly tying Alberto Gonzales, in his role at White House Counsel, to the torture of Abu Zubaydah. This confirms ex-FBI agent Ali Soufan's account in last week's Senate hearing that Zubaydah was subject to torture from at least April to June of 2002 (when Soufan left the interrogation team).

NPR reports that contractor James Mitchell was in regular contact with the White House in the spring of 2002.

3. Maybe this agency should be disbanded.
The original purpose of the CIA was to gather intelligence, not to act as a rogue agency.

7. I think you are right. The CIA seems to cause more trouble for this country than it helps the
country.

The CIA seems to think they run the country despite the law. Hell we all know it is the military industrial complex running the country! The CIA just gives them some cooked intelligence to work with. That's all.
