Sorry for the vanity, but I'm in serious need of some freeper advice here. I think I'm falling in love with a liberal. She's beautiful and has a big heart, but we have conflicting political ideologies. Does anyone have any tips for being in a relationship like that? Thanks FRiends...

who was a conservative? I'll admit, my wife is much more conservative than I am. We seem to get along fine.

really, that is what seperates me from so many in this area and what my hubby is proud of adn appreciates. sittin at table in restaraunt with 3 other couples, friends of his, farmers, small town texans, ... hubby folds arms, leans back and says, my wife doesnt agree with the iraq war.

i never took repug away from hubby. people want to call him a liberal or dem now and i dont allow it. he is still the repug that is pissed at the last decade

I know plenty of conservatives around here. Hell, even related to some of them. They are wonderful people who wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off their backs. it's their cynical greedy, venal "leaders" I have a problem with.

A little online tribalism is fun, but we shouldn't let it blind us to the reality that a lot of the decent people we deal with on a daily basis are on "the other side". And on the other had, plenty of the assholes we run into are the "good guys".

Politics are not everything in life and a little controversy adds spice to the mix. As long as the other person's views are not too extreme, go with the flow and enjoy it.

The freeper may think he's in love, but he's still looking for excuses to avoid conflict rather than facing up to and dealing with it. If he fundamentally disagrees with her ideals--what she believes in most strongly--they're starting off at arm's length.

To FR's credit, several of the posters at least seem to recognize that this incompatibility is important and potentially fatal to a relationship.

but, if i have someone that doesnt think like me, is comfortable expressing themselves, in a noncombative manner, i have even learned a thing or two, become more openminded and saw other perspectives which are just as valid and made me a better person

But I hope they work out. I'm a fan of opposites-attract relationships. They can be great for both involved and help grow and evolve.

i brought up public schools, how i was a die-hard strong believer in the idea that ALL children deserve as equal an educational playing field as possible, and that building a strong public school infrastructure is the best and ONLY way to ensure this.

we had our first political debate/giant argument. he of course raved on about the "Charter Schools and vouchers that help poor kids (who are mostly minorities) vs. the NEA “no choice” stance". which of course i tore apart piece by piece.

i've been working on him for 15 years since then. no luck. his point of view: "if only you UNDERSTOOD Libertarianism, you would agree with me". in other words, "if you weren't so STUPID you would agree with me". i've read (endured) TONS more Libertarian literature in the past 15 years than i had consumed in all my previous life of reading political literature. but it is still MY intellectual shortcoming that i fail to agree with the scorched-earth bootstraps I-Got-Mine-ism of Libertarianism.

i've tried for years to rationalize it with the "Matalin and Carville manage to stay married" mantra.

at this point in my life it would be such a pleasure to be able to have rational political discourse at home... and it ain't happening.

Reality check: politics has no direct bearing on performance in the sack. If you think about it, for someone to actually believe what they hear on Fox News they have to either have a great imagination... or no critical thinking skills at all. If that has any impact on sexual activity, then conservatives are a sexual roll of the dice. You might end up with Les Nessman or you might end up with those dudes who make South Park.
