David Hyde Pierce: "It's a very odd thing" that strangers have a vote on who he can marry
NEW YORK – After keeping his private life out of the spotlight for years, David Hyde Pierce has announced his marriage to longtime partner Brian Hargrove.

The former "Frasier" star spoke candidly in an appearance on ABC's "The View." Wearing a wedding band, Hyde Pierce revealed they tied the knot "very quietly" in California on Oct. 24.

The actor and Hargrove, a producer, are still legally wed despite the California Supreme Court's decision Tuesday to uphold Proposition 8. The gay-marriage ban was approved by voters in November, stopping legal nuptials going forward.

Angered by the ruling, Hyde Pierce said Thursday: "It's like, `Oh great, we made the cut.'"

He called it a "very odd thing" that strangers have a vote on his private decision to marry.

3. We need to grow up, as a society, and just have a "pick one" policy
Edited on Fri May-29-09 03:40 PM by SoCalDem
After age 18, each adult should be able to pick one *person as their legally recognized SPOUSE. That spouse could be anyone over 18, and IF that couple decided to "sanctify" their marriage/ union/ relationship/ partnership/ whatever-THEY-chooseto-call-it, there are plenty of churches/ synagogues/ temples/ mosques/ chapels/ cathedrals around, so they could surely find SOME religious place that would perform a RELIGIOUS ceremony for them.

On applications the "married/single" box could just say "coupled-uncoupled" or there could just BE no box to check at all. There could be a line for "spouse's name", and that should do it.

IT'S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS, WHO SOMEONE ELSE CHOOSES TO SHARE THEIR PERSONAL LIVES WITH..

* obviously, a blood-relative "could" be excluded, unless that person was designated for the purposes of inheritance/ insurance coverage/ hospital visitation & decision-making.

IF we had single-payer universal health care, a LOT of the "issues" woud melt away. Boiled down, most of the objection is the "LOST MONEY", since right wingers really have gotten attached to the money never "passed on" via social security & pension plans because gay people must remain single, and when they die, no one "gets" it.

5. He's exactly correct
Why should absolute strangers be allowed under the law to vote on who I can marry. Fuck John Q. Public. Maybe we should have the right to vote on their religion.

6. Only sociopaths have "whom someone loves" anywhere on a list of 'problems.'
I just cannot, for the life of me, comprehend how a SANE person can think that any two consenting adults who love each other and want to be married is a 'problem' of ANY kind.

When I was a kid, it'd fall under the "none of your beeswax" category.

Sociopaths. :puke:
