Did anybody hear about the SC law requiring women to see ultrasounds before an abortion?
I just opened an email my mom sent me a couple of weeks ago, about how the South Carolina legistature passed a law requiring that a woman that wants to have an abortion MUST look at an ultrasound of the fetus before the operation is performed.

:wtf:

This is what she sent me. The link doesn't work because it's been archived and the 'free press' wants to charge to look at it.

South Carolina forces women to see ultrasound before abortion
There’s nothing like a little woman-punishing to get legislators all hot and bothered.

A bill approved in the South Carolina House this week would force women to see a fetal ultrasound before they have abortions.

After three hours of passionate debate, the House voted 91-23 to require women to sign a statement swearing they had seen an ultrasound image of their fetus before getting an abortion.
A half-dozen other states offer ultrasound images to abortion patients, legislative staffers said. But those states do not require abortion patients view them.

You know, because it’s ridiculous.

And if you had any doubt that this law was about punishing women, and somehow making them “face” their transgression, check this out:

Rep. Todd Rutherford, D-Richland, railed against Republicans for opposing his amendment to exempt victims of rape and incest from the required ultrasound viewing.

This logic goes to show that this isn’t about making sure women are informed—it’s about punishing them. So women who were raped shouldn’t have to have their noses rubbed in their pregnancies and be punished any further--that’s just for the “bad” women who wanted to have sex. Ugh.

Are they also going to require that people who want to buy an appliance made in China first look at a photo album of Chinese slave-labor factories? Or when you buy a garment made in the Mariana Islands you first have to look at a fat American businessman raping a 13-year-old factory worker? Or when you fill up your gas tank you have too look at pictures of dead Iraqis and American soldiers?

4. Don't know about SC, but this law just passed in GA
I am sick of this state. I am ashamed by what they have done to it and embarrassed that the people of this country will think that we are really this stupid.

5. Every "Birthright" or similar clinic in the nation offers free ultrasounds
They advertise it in their phone book ads. Any woman who wants a free ultrasound to help her make up her mind is welcome to visit a "problem pregnancy clinic" and get one.

7. Key word there is offers
These laws make it compulsory: no ultrasound, no abortion. These laws are going to be challenged. Just wait.

In addition, are they going to try to show an ultrasound of an embryo under 8 weeks? Very, very difficult to even show. Would they be willing, if they could, to show an embryo that early which still looks like a shrimp?
