****Condolences to Jeanne Tiller and the rest of George Tiller's Family****
Please accept our deepest, heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Know that a nation of women and their advocates grieve with you. It's not much consolation when you've lost someone that you loved and needed, but for what it's worth, George Tiller died a hero's death. He was an icon for millions of us who believe that circumventing the rule of law and targeting doctors for political persecution is morally abhorrent. He was a pillar of strength that stood firm behind the idea that our bodies belong to US, and that every woman should have the right to make her own decisions based on her own individual circumstances. He was courageous, standing up to decades of heckling, abuse, harassment, terror campaigns, and violence of fanatics who neither respect nor obey the very code of laws that they seek to change. His legacy will live far beyond him. Every time a doctor suffers taunts and threats for doing what he believes is right--and then does it ANYWAY; every time a woman squares her shoulders and walks past the line of crazies screaming obscenities at her, every time a woman squares her shoulders and walks into the clinic without caving to fear as fanatics hound and scream obscenities at her; every time We the People rise up at the ballot box to strike down laws that would put the women of this nation into chains; his memory will be honored in that act of defiance. Those who seek to make us tremble with your lies, your violence, and your terrorism--YOU WILL FAIL.

He was a hero to millions. But to you, he was George--the husband, the father, the man you loved and laughed with and needed as much as any of us need our loved ones. And so today, we remember him, and honor him, and mourn with you.

We wish you peace and comfort in the coming days. You are in our hearts, as is the memory of George Tiller.

On behalf of every woman who values her liberty, her autonomy, and her CHOICE--thank you.

Dr. Tiller was a wonderful humanitarian with a compassionate heart. He was also a strong, principled patriot who believed that a woman should be able to make decisions about her own life without government interference. He practiced medicine according to his conscience and touched many with his healing hands and his courage. He will never be forgotten.

37. Beyond sad -- so sorry. The surreal triangulation of a demented individual who kills in the name of
"pro life" while a doctor walks into church.

What universe am I inhabiting where that happens?
I didn't think "those people" could stun me any further than they have in the past -- alas, sadly, they've sunk to a new low.

Sending all positive thoughts to the good doctor's family, office staff, and patients.

Carry on with your heads held high. You do for women what we treasure -- give us the dignity of our bodies and our lives.

compassionate people like this are gunned down for providing women with health services. It is frightening that the likes of randall terry can convince someone that this doctor needed to be murdered. Randall terry called Tiller a murderer. He is blameworthy also. No wonder their site is down. I'm sure they are busy scrubbing it down.

80. my father was also OB-GYN
and this weekend brought back some nasty memories of high school in the early 90s, when Virginia Beach was one of the anti-choice battlefields with threats, bombs, bullets and armed escort, and the late 90s in college where I'm searching all the hate sites to make sure no one posted his address and photo with gun crosshairs on it...luckily, afaik my dad never had to deal with anything horrible other than some random light vandalism...

i guess like others, i had become complacent, thinking the brazen violence was a thing of the past, as the anti-choice groups tried to prop up a more peaceful, professional front image...but I fear things are starting to fall apart...my condolences to the Tiller family.

83. ChickMagic and I extend our condolences as well
I used to be pro-life, but I never advocated violence against doctors or patients. ChickMagic has always been pro-choice, and she was able to win me over to her side with a lot of patience and education.

The key word here is education. George Tiller was murdered and his church defiled by an assassin who apparently opposes the idea of women getting the education they need about their own health, let alone the ability to take the necessary steps to preserve it.

We are both truly sorry for the Tiller family's loss.

86. A life is a life no matter how small, or big
Dr. George Tillers murder is a tragedy.
Even though I may not agree with people on this forum or Dr. Tiller, the actions of fanatics should not be tolerated and I hope the killer is prosecuted.

The hardest hit will be the children and grandchildren, afterall, the reason Dr. Tiller worked in this dangerous field was for them.

90. Actually, the reason he worked in "this field" was for women.
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 11:46 AM by omega minimo
The ChurchKillers forget that part.

Women. Women's lives, women's health, women's families. Actual human beings.

The reason "this field" became "dangerous" was because of religious hypocritical domestic terrorists who "may not agree" and use their "Pro Life" opinions to justify murder.

The "fanatics" are an organized, accomplished, branded movement of "Pro Life" domestic terrorism. Please don't pretend this was an individual act. It's insulting, as is your little "no matter how small" crap.

88. Thanks for posting this.
He and his family put up with decades of harrasshment by insanely religious scumbags in order to provide his patients with care... and he finally paid for the rantings of those who promote such religious insanity with his life.

96. wow
I am not condoning his murder even though I disagree with what he did for a living. This is not the way to deal with those that you disagree with.
I am also amazed at some of the comments about people other than the shooter himself being responsible for Tiller's death and threats that have been stated.
I have to wonder how many here are posting their condolences about the two soldiers that were just shot by a converted muslim. One died. Soldiers have died for all of us to voice our opinions and are the real hero's.

94. Many years ago, Dr. Tiller saved my life.
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 01:12 PM by earthboundmisfit
Because he did, today I am a healthy mother of two healthy children.
I've tried to write this several time over the last day, but always ended in tears.
I have my family today because of Dr. George Tiller, and my thanks forever go to this tireless hero of a woman's right to health care, and my heartfelt sympathy to his family.
