Hey, weren't the Constitution and the Bill of Rights essentially written during
wartime???

How come they didn't include rendition and torture as OK thingys, after all, the British Ter'rists were an occupying force in this country and THEIR penalty for doing things like forming your own congress was punishable by death.....

The founders knew that and still guaranteed 10 essential rights for all citizens, british sympathisers or not.

Modern politicians are cowards compared to those folks.

Just sayin'

2. No. The Constitution was written in 1787. And the Bill of Rights was written between
1788-1791. We were not at war then. The Revolution ended in 1783. Between then and the Constitutional Convention, the U.S. tried living like a "states rights" confederation. Didn't work out too well, hence the drafting of a new constitution.

4. Damn. I fully admit to being a victim of the public school system and find
wikipedia tedious and disorganized....

I figured they were worked on during the war, word processors being guys with quills and parchment, the internet a series of tubes with horse poop on 'em.....

Still, calling current politicians cowards works, I think.....

3. They were well aware of the danger of religiously inspired terrorists

one for example, if successful, would have murdered hundreds of MPS:

Yet they seemed to think the abuses of national power were worth the risk

5. Probably because the British gov't and military were not above the use of summary execution/torture.
Many of those protections found in the Bill of Rights were borne out of experiences people faced living under the English Crown with no real representation in British Parliament.

Also, as another poster already cited, the Bill of Rights and Constitution weren't written during war time but after the war ended.

6. Even though the British tortured and abused the American revolutionaries that
they took as POWs, General George Washington forbade Americans from doing it to the British POWs. I think the precedent was set then of how we treat POWs. I believe this is why the Bush administration removed them from POW status.

7. As mentioned above, they post=dated the revolution, but it must be
noted that there were many source documents for the constitution and BoR, including the various state constitutions, several of which included bills of specific rights - and many of these constitutions WERE created during the revolution.

9. The founders had a pre-9-11 mindset.
We need to do away with all their crazy lib'rul ideas, like the Bill of Rights.

After all they hate us for our freedoms.
