Twitter's psychic experiment
Thousands of people will test their psychic powers this week on Twitter.

Last Updated: 9:22AM BST 31 May 2009

In the first scientific experiment to be conducted via the social messaging service, experts will investigate "remote viewing" - the psychic ability to identify distant locations.

Members of the public will be asked to "tweet" their impressions of a randomly chosen spot in the UK visited by one of the researchers.

The trial will be repeated with visually different locations four times.

If at the end of the experiment the votes correctly identify at least three targets, it will support the existence of extra-sensory perception.

1. I predict lots of vague, sorta-kinda-maybe-correct impressions...
that get counted as positive results.

8. It's raining. . . I'm on an island. . . I'm in a pub . . . I'm in the loo . . .

remote viewing. Puh-shaw. I say everyone on twitter concentrate on stopping some evil bad guy's heart, say, Ahmedinejad or Kim Jong Il. If he dies, it worked. Much simpler than all this victorian era esp nonsense.

The problem with any active sense is that it requires constant feedback. You can no more "remote view" without some kind of mechanism that gives you immediate feedback that you are indeed "remote viewing" than you could remote flush a toilet without some kind of feedback that the toilet was flushing. Or not.

Silliness.

2. I'll bet a dollar on the outcome.
It doesn't work. The result isn't publicized. Nobody notices.

6. Actually, since the guy in charge is from CSICOP
And is a skeptic, it probably will be publicized. It will then be summarily dismissed by all the woo-woo artists who believe in such things.

4. I'm glad it's being run by Richard Wiseman
Although I hesitate to call such an activity as what they're doing, "scientific," but at least with him, there won't be any allowance for allowing vague answers as "hits."

5. "There's water nearby"... "a road is not far away"... etc....

It's bullshit.

something about 1000 monkeys typing for 1000 years...
