See the army has this program called "hometown recruiter". The top 5% or so of a bootcamp class gets recommended by their drill Sgt. They get orders to go home after boot camp for 2 weeks.
It is a pretty slick position especially for an 18yr old. You get to work a 9 to 5 in your hometown, see your friends, collect some TDY pay before you go to your first regular duty station. I got to do it when I enlisted and enjoyed it.
You work with a recruiter and spend 2 weeks going to schools, working booths, career days that kind of thing. You explain the military, basic training, drill sgts, or anything recruits might have a question on. You explain it from an young person lower enlisted point of view. Sometimes it helps because recruits have a peer instead of a 30yr old career soldier recruiter.
These 2 kids were picked because they were ahead of the class in basic. Motivated, team players, willing to above & beyond.
In return for their dedication they were in the wrong place & time.
I never considered it a dangerous assignment but then again those were different times.
