Iran asks to see Iranians held by U.S. in Iraq

Iran asks to see Iranians held by U.S. in Iraq 04 Apr 2007 The U.S. military said on Wednesday it had received an "informal" request for an Iranian consular official to meet five Iranians who have been held in Iraq by U.S. forces since January. U.S. military spokesman Major-General William Caldwell said the five were suspected of being intelligence agents. Iran says they are diplomats and has demanded their immediate release.

Excerpts: Ahmadinejad announces release 04 Apr 2007 Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced at a news conference in Tehran that the 15 British sailors and marines would be freed as a "gift to the British people". (Transcript) "On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great prophet of Islam, and on the occasion of Easter and Passover, I would like to announce that the great nation of Iran, while it is entitled to put the British military personnel on trial, has pardoned these 15 sailors and gives their release to the people of Britain as a gift." (Oops! The Reichwing media forgot to report that Ahmadinejad mentioned Passover, as well.)

1. The botched US raid that led to the hostage crisis
The botched US raid that led to the hostage crisis 'The objective of the Americans was to arrest Iranian security officials who had gone to Iraq to develop co-operation in the area of bilateral security.' 03 Apr 2007 A failed American attempt to abduct two senior Iranian security officers on an official visit to northern Iraq was the starting pistol for a crisis that 10 weeks later led to Iranians seizing 15 British sailors and Marines. Early on the morning of 11 January, helicopter-born US forces launched a surprise raid on a long-established Iranian liaison office in the city of Arbil in Iraqi Kurdistan... The US attack had a far more ambitious objective, The Independent has learned. The aim of the raid, launched without informing the Kurdish authorities, was to seize two men at the very heart of the Iranian security establishment. The attempt by the US to seize the two high-ranking Iranian security officers openly meeting with Iraqi leaders is somewhat as if Iran had tried to kidnap the heads of the CIA and MI6 while they were on an official visit to a country neighbouring Iran, such as Pakistan or Afghanistan.
