3. Wouldn't he have stated the position of the glow relative to his flight path?
Curiouser and Curiouser.

6. He didn't know the AFR was missing.
He wouldn't have reported it and unless there's a radio transmission or a logged flight computer event near that time, there's probably a large position window.

7. Doubt it would help.
Water gets pretty solid at 40 knots.

At 350k+, it pretty much obliterates whatever hits it.

9. What are the chances that a P-3 could pick up it's position using Magnetic Anomaly Detection?
The same way they track submarines?

12. Too many variables to make an educated guess.
It's possible, I suppose.

5. That gives me chills
The Atlantic has very few island groups. If there's trouble, you're gone, lost in an area of thousands of square miles of nothingness.

I've never been on a transoceanic flight. If I ever go, I'm looking for a good boat.

10. As a Sailor, I never got used to the fact that there were sometimes over 10,000 feet of water
under my ship.

14. sometimes when I swim across lakes in the middle of the night
I happen upon fishing boats and the fisherman always tells me how deep the water is - as if it makes any difference to me if the water is 10 feet deep or 10,000 feet deep :D

11. This is just chilling
To be lost at sea, with little hope of recovering those who perished...It's terrible to think about. I hope it was quick and that they lost consciousness long before impact. My sympathies go out to the families and friends.
