And Now A Word From Phyllis And Anita

"At least it's a fruit pie."

Only in America would the notion of a nearly-naked fundamentalist Christian beauty queen tossing her processed hair as she parades brand new, pageant-bought plastic breasts across a Las Vegas stage in front of millions of television viewers with all the modesty of a blue ribbon heifer at a county livestock fair (the same fundamentalist Christian beauty queen who would later tell a television reporter that she heard God whispering in her ear as she answered a celebrity-worshipping Internet gossip columnist's question about gay marriage) be treated as anything other than an occasion for high comedy and mirth.

Anita Bryant remains a lingering symbol of how the cruelest bigotry can wear a pretty face. But at least Anita Bryant could sing for her orange juice. Alas, since there was no talent portion of the Miss U.S.A. pageant, we may never know what gifts Prejan might have brought to the table if she'd been listening to her own voice that night in Vegas instead of whoever, or whatever, she claims was telling her what to say.

Washington University recently announced that it would be awarding right-wing activist Phyllis Schlafly an honorary degree at its graduation ceremony on May 16. Schlafly is notorious for her outspoken belief that women should be homemakers and her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment. In a statement, the university lauded Schlafly as a “national leader of the conservative movement.”

Opposition was swift. Two Facebook groups opposing the award immediately popped up and now have more than 4,000 members combined. Today, 14 faculty members of the Washington University School of Law also wrote a sharp letter asking school’s chancellor to rescind the award:

As the professors note, Schlafly’s accomplishments include going after “the gay and lesbian agenda,” calling for the “impeachment” of Supreme Court justices, calling anyone who believes in evolution an “atheist,” and opposing the Violence Against Women Act. She has also claimed that women “are too emotional to handle intellectual or scientific debate” and described sex education as “in-home sales parties for abortions.”

Palin’s value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women’s wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves “abstinence-only” programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers’ millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn’t spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but she supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.

4. I had a friend who went to Washington University for a year
It would appear to have changed substantially in the last 30 years if they're handing out honorary diplomas to the likes of Phyllis Schlafly. I'd wonder what the poobahs of the university have against their female students that they would dishonor them in such a manner?

5. Very good comment on how times change, history down the memory hole and TPTB present as innocuous
egregious actions of the past.

9. I will never understand these women who beg to be oppressed.
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 01:53 PM by Kitty Herder
The sign that says "Stop ERA" reads "Please oppress me!" to my eyes.

I know this attitude is largely fueled by religion, but doesn't some part of women like Phyllis Shlfly scream out against the inequality and misogyny? I once truly believed in the incredibly sexist religion that I grew up in, but it hurt deeply to do so. I believed God hated me and all women and I was screaming in pain inside (and occasionally on the outside, too) even as I professed my belief in the "one true church." But even as I professed belief, I spoke out against the misogyny present in that belief system.I finally got wise and left that church. I couldn't stand the cognitive dissonance any more.

So what goes on the minds of these women who hate women's equality that prevents them from feeling the pain of their own beliefs? Or are they simply better at hiding it than I was?

11. Shouldn't Phyllis be home
baking cookies? That would be consistent with her outlook.
