So how did you spend your first day as co-owner of General Motors?
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 10:34 AM by KansDem
Yesterday, I put on a pair of red golf pants with white belt and white shoes, and a light-blue polo shirt. I also put on a cap that has those little, crossed golf clubs on the front. I then headed on down to the country club. My intention was to go into the lounge and sit at the bar. I was going to smoke a cigar while downing a few beers, all the while bitching and moaning to the bartender about the Democrats, the unions, and the government. I was even going to throw in a little Japan- and Germany-bashing for good measure. Well, when I got there I was not allowed to stay! I was told to leave!

I said rather tersely, "Do you know WHO I AM!!! I am a co-owner of General Motors!!!" But the bartender said he was too, as well as the cocktail waitress. The two security guys who escorted me out said they were co-owners as well. And both the groundskeeper and the housekeeper said they were co-owners, as did the doorman.

So I guess it isn't as big a deal as I tought...:(

9. Sorry to hear about your family
I hope everything works out for them...

Perhaps it can be considered ironic that I actually spent yesterday driving to Topeka to obtain a replacement title for my 1965 Chevelle. I found a buyer who either wants to restore it or use it for parts for another restoration.

After 44 years, it finally stopped running last December and has been sitting in my driveway since.

using tax payer financing. But then I realized they just did that. Now the thing to think about is how many Chinese made SUV's can be reasonably imported to the US.

19. Good. Can I sell my share? Can I give it away? Can I take possesion of it?
Explain to me how I "own" something that I have no control over.

I "own" my Toyota. I can sell it, give it away, leave it to my heirs, destroy it, etc.

The Government "owns" GM we just pick up bills.

20. "We" as a society of taxpaying citizens under a representative government.
We own the national park system, but I can't decide to sell Yellowstone to Canada by myself.

It's true that GM is not worth much at the moment. However, under the proposed reforms, GM will become a profitable company again, will rise in value, and the government will end up selling its shares for far more than the rock-bottom price at which we acquired them. It would require absolute incompetence for this to not end up being profitable for the taxpayer.

26. We also "own" the government and it's mulititude of debts.
And, we are infrequently consulted if we want to pay for it.

We also "own" the military. How profitable is that?

When the "representatives" are on the payroll of the corporations how representative are they? As for GM becoming profitable again, how are they to do that? They can't compete with the foreign manufacturers, there's a recession on in which few people are buying cars anywhere. Perhaps diversify into making toasters?

12. Hoping that some day Americans wake up and buy American.
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 10:26 AM by Kalyke
This isn't the 1980s. American cars are cheaper to purchase, cheaper to fix and are comparable, if not better, in quality to the rice burners (yes - I am not normally a bit bigoted, but I think Toyotas are EVIL).

My co-workers - who both have Honda's - were JUST THIS MINUTE - discussing all these problems they've had with them, including the time one of my co-workers had to send her car back to the FACTORY for a month to have something fixed.

When asked what mechanic I use, I said, "I have a Ford. I don't have a mechanic because I never need one." :)

18. toyotas are eviiiillllll, my toyota mayby bad but evil i dont think so
personally i spent a lot of time looking at vehicles and the desicion came down to capability, space, and what my wife decided i could have :) It would take a lot for me ever to buy anything other than a toyota or land rover nowadays due to brand loyalty.

22. Cheaper to fix because you have to fix it a lot!
"I don't have a mechanic for my Ford because I don't need one. When it falls apart, I just buy a new one!"

Those days are gone forever, thank God. Not for Ford, but for GM cars. I think they will be as extinct as Hupmobiles and Stanley Steamers.

24. Buy a new one?
Uh - no. I kept my last Ford for 13 years and, when I traded it in, it only needed a clutch.

Sorry you have fallen for the anti-American-car propaganda since 1986.

32. Well i dont know about propaganda
There is a site though that is actually trying to measure actual repair rates and at first glance it aint looking so hot for American cars.

I looked at a ford flex with an average of around 30 repairs per year per 100 vehicles and compared it to what I drive a honda element with an average of 11.

Admittedly this was only one search I did but I am fairly certain the pattern would be repeated if i looked further.

23. I spent the day negotiating with both Chrysler and GM to keep
my family's (niece and her husband) dealerships open. So far, so good. I think geography plus good management has worked to their advantage. They're the only dealership between 2 large cities, one in WVa and the other in Va. Keep your fingers crossed!

34. Thanks, they're going to need it.
They managed to survive the first round of closings. Just hope they can hang on. Lots of people depend on them for jobs. Biggest industry there used to be the railroad, but now it's the paper mill. The area can't afford to lose more jobs (Appalachia).

35. Ford had a sales increase from April to May
and will increase production of a few vehicles. If GM and Chrysler had gone down, the damage to the supplier network would've hurt Ford (maybe even dragging them down too).
