Oh, the irony! Hummer to be bought by the Chinese!!! NYT
NYT:

"The Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd., based in Chengdu, concluded the agreement with G.M., said the person, who insisted on anonymity . . . G.M. said the deal would save about 3,000 jobs in the United States, including those at its 153 domestic dealerships, and that Hummer would remain based in the United States . . . The brand has long sought to emphasize patriotism, stressing that the Hummer H1 was essentially the same vehicle built in the same factory as the Humvee that carries American soldiers into battle in Iraq and elsewhere."

1. I'm shocked I tell you.
I assume the Chinese are banking on us never changing.

Let's hope they bet on the wrong horse...it seems they have.

2. A lot of people on the left hate Hummer.
Now that it's to be Chinese owned, a lot of people on the right will hit Hummer, too.

Good riddance.

26. We looked at it as a RESCUE vehicle for about two days
it has some good things going for it, as a RESCUE vehicle.. like oh ground clearance.

But the maintenance and operational cost were too insane.

15. Not sure it is the hummer they hate but what it represents..."War"
I hate "WAR" and think anything in the civilian arena that represents War is abhorrent. But that is just me and I realize the USA is a very War Mongering Nation..Can't imagine a communist country making our military vehicles from now on though, as much as the right wing hates communist countries..

That was what they were when they were a part of the War effort. Stands for "General Purpose" vehicle and no I do not buy such items. Nor do I buy mini 14s or anything similar.. I hate "war" and all it represents and anything that reminds me of such..

21. Well... with a whopping 8 mpg and considering it's bigger than all parking spaces...
and most roads, people see it as the ultimate expression of selfishness.

23. That's OK, they always take up two spaces, anyhow.
Or four, like the one I saw the other day in the supermarket lot. When I came back to my car, a woman was loading groceries into it.

5. I was wondering the same thing. Are they REALLY going to keep making those d@mn things
or are they going to use the plant to start making some other kind of car??

Or just sell the place for scrap?

I can't believe even the STUPIDEST American would buy a Hummer now.

I don't think they're serious about this, either.

They'll probably just make a few hummers for show. The real plan is to be making tanks and hummers in the back room for their troops to use when our government goes broke. The Capital building isn't going to foreclose itself!

24. I guess they could build them here and ship them to China, but that seems unlikely.
Unless you think they are going to stop making these:

And start making these:

Because tacky knows no borders.

by becoming the company that outfits our soldiers.

9. Military Contracts....
So that means that a CHINESE company now gets all the US Military contracts to build Hummer.

How long before all US plants are closed and the Hummers are made exclusively with CHINESE labor?

10. Does Hummer actually make the HMMWV?
They licensed the HMMWV from AM General, and made it into the H1. They stopped making the H1, and the H2 and H3 are simply Tonka-truck shells on more conventional pick-up chassis.

What's known in the civilian world as the Hummer no longer has much to do with the military's HMMWV.

Yesterday I joked about China buying the Hummer brand... now it's news.

Some people around here think Hummers are crap! Now they will be crap!

Still funny....

12. I thought GM sold off the military side of Hummer a while ago.
As for the rest of it, the H2 and H3 are nothing more than other GM SUV's with Hummer like bodies.

14. In what way is this ironic?
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 12:10 PM by AngryAmish
Is this an example, like the Alanis Morisette song, of people saying something is ironic when it is not?

on self edit: I am wrong. It is ironic that somethng that is supposed to be patriotically American is actually owned by a foreign entity. I guess I never thought Hummer was particuarly patriotic. My bad.

That was one thing I learned in China is the Chinese love European and American products and hate cheap Chinese crap just as much as Americans do. If they can afford an American car they will buy one.
