Man Whizzes By Gas Stations With Self-Made Electric Car
<INDIANAPOLIS -- With gas prices up another 20 cents Tuesday, an Indianapolis man is happy to not have to worry about it.

Patrick Roth uses a fully electric car to take his daughter to school and run errands, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

The car may look like any ordinary Ford Escort, but a closer look reveals that it's anything but. Roth didn't buy the car that way. He built it himself.

"I have taken out all of the components to the internal combustion engine and replaced it with a big electric motor and a bunch of batteries," Roth said. "Essentially, I've turned it into a 100 percent electric vehicle.">

Maybe he should get a job with GM!

1. "Passing Gas"
I've seen that sticker with a bicycle passing a gas station, but it's appropriate here, too.

6. Plenty of people already in that business.
This has been going on for decades. Use the Google. Find the message forums. Seek out the many vendors of kits and parts. See the auctions for kits and such on Ebay. It's not rocket science.

16. I have researched many new technologies...
including cars that run on water as reported on in this link.

I believe the technology exists but the average consumer will never benefit as it would destabilize the world market and oil companies would become obsolete. We can't have that.

I wouldn't want the wife and kids in some contraption like that.

8. I'm all for reducing vehicle emissions, but
wouldn't a plethora of electric cars just produce more power plant emissions?

It's still impressive.

9. Nope.
Powerplants are way more efficient that internal combustion engines, so the net carbon load is lower, even with coal fired powerplants.

Replace the coal powerplants with non-carbon sources and it would be totally clean.

14. Right. And with no change to the vehicle needed
Petroleum-dependent cars are a dead-end. Although private transport numbers will almost certainly have to decrease, electric vehicles have a future at least.

Electric cars essentially act as a different kind of flexible-fuel vehicle. The car doesn't care whether the electricity comes from coal, gas, wind, solar, or hydro.

But we do.

12. Not fast enough, not enough miles per charge and too costly for me .....
if a commercial version was built.

When they develop the technology for an electric car that can get at least 200 miles per charge (for short trips), has freeway performance ability and costs no more than a gas or hybrid car they will have customers.

Until that happens, just a few people who can afford a new second car will be in the market for all-electric cars.

17. Mitsubishi (and I think Subaru) are close to selling $17K electric cars in Japan...
that move along at highway speeds and get up to 99 miles/charge (with an upgraded battery pack). I think the standard battery gives ~40 miles.

Face it: GM, Ford and Chrysler blew it.

He still has it parked behind his barn.

20. think of how prices would drop if the cars were mass produced
using the factories and employees that are going to go idle when GM shut them down. Jeeeez, it's a winning situation for everybody but the oil guys and they can still fuel airplanes and ships.
