Sexual Assaults Up; Crime Rates Down
Sacramento Homicide Rates Decrease For 2009, Police Say

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento police said reports of sexual assaults have doubled in 2009 from this time last year, even though other crime rates are down.

Since the start of the year, police have seen a significant drop in homicide rates, Sgt. Norm Leong said, and that crime rates for the past two years have dropped almost 15 percent despite staffing shortages.

Leong said the increased sexual assaults were noted in cases where the victim knew the suspect either as a friend or a family member.
