Gitmo Detainee Dead In "Apparent Suicide"

A Guantanamo detainee has died in what the military are calling an "apparent suicide" -- and civil liberties groups are calling for action.

Guards found 31-year-old Muhammad Ahmad Abdallah Salih, known as Al-Hanashi, unresponsive and not breathing in his cell Monday night, U.S. military officials announced, according to the AP.

"The suicide occurred late Monday, but it was not revealed by the military until after a dozen journalists who were covering a military tribunal session left the base near midday Tuesday. A Defense Department official said the reason was that the Yemen government had not yet been notified."

He was only 5'7" and at one point his weight was down to 70lbs.

Wiki says: "The healthy range for his weight was between 124 and 166 pounds. According to those records his weight was recorded 132 times between his arrival at Guantanamo on February 8 2002 and November 24 2006. For eight of those weigh-ins his weight was within the healthy range. His weight was dangerously low for 124 weigh-ins. His lowest recorded weight was 70 pounds."

It's very possible that his body finally just gave up.
