Bush Needed Condi To Explain 'Articulate' Flap During Dem Primary
Bush found himself perplexed by the flap over Joe Biden describing Obama as "articulate and bright and clean" in January 2007. So, naturally, the president turned to the top U.S. diplomat, the trusted Condi Rice, to explain what the heck this was all about.

Here's the tidbit from the first chapter of Wolffe's book:

*** Bush was so taken aback with the public criticism of Biden that he called in his African American secretary of state Condoleezza Rice. "I don't get it," he said. "Condi, what's going on?" Rice told him what everyone else had said: that white people don't call each other articulate.

One has to ask: can we really blame Bush for not knowing the conventions attached to that particular adjective?

1. Nobody Would Call Bush Articulate, For sure
Or Limbaugh, who talks like he's on drugs....what? Oh, nevermind.

3. Or bright. Or clean for that matter. Drunk maybe. Foolish, definitely.

4. I still don't get it. I'm sure as hell white, and I DO call people "articulate"...
given that the adjective fits, all the time. I thought then and still do think it is stupidity to make a fuss about some of these so-called "gaffes". I'm pretty sure Biden was simply contrasting Obama with Bush -- and the backlash came about in order to dodge that bullet and to distract from his VALID point by making it about race.

5. I was going to say the same; I sometimes call people articulate, inarticulate too.

6. Same here. Biden employed some of my mother's favorite vocabulary for her white children & others...
... and Mama didn't raise any racists.

When a ruckus such as this is raised for the reasons it was raised, ask who does it serve. It certainly doesn't serve good racial relations.
