Man Gets 4 Life Terms For Torturing Wife
Woman Victimized For 19 Years

POSTED: 5:58 am PDT June 3, 2009

SALINAS, Calif. -- A Carmel Valley man who tortured his wife for 19 years, disfiguring the woman with hot barbecue tongs and tattoos, has been sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison.

Testimony during the monthlong trial showed 45-year-old Aniano Olea repeatedly beat and whipped his wife, burned her face with hot tongs and tattooed her forehead and neck with the words "whore" and "adulteress."

Salinas Superior Court Judge Robert Moody sentenced Olea on Tuesday, calling him a sadistic psychopath who "has all the building blocks" of a serial killer and would have eventually murdered his wife.

Prosecutor Elaine McCleaf and Moody credited Norum for sealing the case with two key witnesses from Olea's past who substantiated his history of psychologically and physically imprisoning women.

Norum said it was luck and good old-fashioned gumshoe work that helped him find the women.

When Olea was arrested in 2007 for abusing his wife, Jane Doe 1, Norum learned about an old domestic-violence case in San Jose in which Olea had stalked his ex-girlfriend and blown up her parents' car. Norum went to the San Jose neighborhood, but could find no one who knew the family's whereabouts.

As he was about to leave, a woman drove up. He asked her if she knew the woman he was looking for. The color drained from her face, Norum said.

"I used to go by that name," she said. "Who did he kill?"

2. you mean she is still alive!! wow! i wonder what got him arrested?
did she finally get away from him or something? that is so sad. I'm gonna bet this guy felt he had every right to do what he wanted to do to his wife. there doesn't seem to be much other information. if the woman tried to get away? how he got caught? at least he is going to be put away.

5. A vast amount of work went into this conviction
Investigator Dave Norum worked hard to make sure this man stayed behind bars for a long time.

When Judge Robert Moody sentenced Aniano Olea to life in prison Tuesday for torturing his wife and terrorizing his stepdaughters, veteran investigator Dave Norum wept openly in the back of the courtroom.

For Norum, the case was one of his most emotionally draining, and satisfying, of his career. And it is his swan song. After 24 years in law enforcement, he will retire from the Monterey County District Attorney's Office on July 1.

Prosecutor Elaine McCleaf and Moody credited Norum for sealing the case with two key witnesses from Olea's past who substantiated his history of psychologically and physically imprisoning women.

9. When I practiced law, the WORST case of spousal abuse I ever saw...
...was when the asshole tied her to a chair for a weekend, cigarette burned her and then urinated all over her.

I represented this woman and I don't think I will ever forget this case.

17. That's terrible!!!!
Poor woman!!!

My mother always taught me to be on the look out for little gestures and warning signals that denote an abuser. Most of them start with verbal abuse before they move on to physical abuse.

you cannot lock someone up for what he 'might' do.

that said . . . i hope this sets a good precedent for bushco's trial(s).

14. It's gratifying to know justice will be served in this case of enhanced interrogation.
The movie, "The Burning Bed", showed only the tip of the iceberg of the horrors Francine Hughes went through. As is always the case, the book gave a more complete picture of Francine's hell than a two-hour movie.

I hope she gets the counseling she needs to process what he did and wht is going on with her
to have "normalized" his behavior.

16. I hope that he gets some of what he doled out in jail.
May he rot in hell, the SOB!!!!!!!

The woman should have bought a gun, learned how to use it and the next time that he tried to "brand" her, she should have blown his brains into smithereens. Abuse bastard!!!!!!
