The right says the US is becoming Socialist.
Here's the chart to prove their point.

What Socialism Looks Like
Have you heard that the United States is headed toward socialism? Jonah Goldberg says it is. Alabama Senator Richard Shelby says it is. Phyllis Schlafly says it is. Richard Viguerie says it is. The Republican National Committee says it is. We must be getting pretty close.

6. Meh. The sky is purple with yellow polka-dots!
I can say that and complain and whine about it - doesn't make it so. But it does give me something to complain and whine about. ;)

Besides, so what if we are becoming socialist? Capitalism is an abject failure anyway.

8. When people crow about the fall of Communism, I remind them that
Capitalism hasn't been around very long so the jury is still out on its survival. Or I just remind them that a third of the world lives under Communist government.

23. You should also remind them HOW Communism fell
Something about a ridiculous "defense" budget that bankrupted the country, much of it wasted on a useless war in Afghanistan, if I remember correctly.

"Those who do not learn from history, etc........"

turf and bleed us dry.

11. this is a reaction to the Rep talking points.
There is a serious discussion to be had here, and I think Jon Henke is having it: Socialism, like farenheit, comes in degrees. Sure, a government that nationalizes GM is "more socialist" than one that does not, even if it doesn't mean we're living "under socialism." But differences of degree shouldn't obscure differences of kind, and as Tim Fernholz says, "it's clear that putting the government in charge of private production is not the Obama administration's guiding philosophy."

If it were, 99.79% of the American corporate assets that existed at the start of the Obama administration would not remain in private hands. The differences of degree are so small that they aren't worth mentioning. And yet, somehow, they keep getting mentioned.

29. I Only Wish That Were True
The socialist countries I have visited offer a far better life for the majority of their citizens than we have in the U.S. I did notice it seems more difficult for any one citizen to become wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.

30. Yet, I got an email blaming Obama for not saving Chrysler!
A few days ago, I got one of those emails from a GOP relative that blamed the government for some Chrysler dealer losing his dealership.

Chrysler. A German Company that was taken over by an Italian company. A privately owned company.

It was Chrysler that breached its contract with the dealer, not the government, yet the GOP loyalists are presenting it as if the government failed to save Chrysler.

For the right, everything they get from government is earned, is deserved, is right. But anything anyone else gets is socialism. We have far more welfare for the rich than for the poor.
