Most people don't read novels now, but I'd like to recommend this one, especially given the murder of Dr. Tiller and the talk that has ensued. If you can't bring yourself to crash in your bed and enjoy a genius novel, then by all means load the movie into your DVD player. The film is a magnificent rendition of the novel (because John Irving was involved).

Cheers.

1. Very good suggestion and rec -- Irving is strictly top-drawer. That novel
would be very timely now and a perfect choice for a summer's read.

Once someone is done with that one, they could move on to A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY.

Irving delivers the goods.

2. He is one of the best novelists of our time.
;-)

And I love Owen Meany, but Cider House will always be Irving's best. The murder of Dr. Tiller reminded me of that.

3. It's a perfect read in the wake of Tiller's death. I hope many DUers will
take you up on your recommendatin. There will be some who have never read him before, and it's going to blow them away.

5. That is an amazing book
The movie wasn't bad but as usual, the book is so much richer.

8. Cider House Rules is absolutely excellent.
I think it's much better than Garp.

Cider House Rules is one of the best novels I have ever read.

10. Yep. And have been thinking about it all week.
In fact, that is about the second thing I thought of after hearing of Tiller's assassination.

13. Great book and great movie.....Charlize Theron, Michael Caine and even Spiderman were fantastic!
The death of Dr. Tiller made me think of this book and movie too...

Since most Americans don't read, maybe if they all watched this movie, they might think twice....

12. After I finished reading Cider House, I set it down beside me and sobbed for a solid half-hour.

Sobbed, I tell you. I've rarely been so moved by a novel that I couldn't stop bawling for a half-hour! Owen Meany had pretty much the same effect on me.

Bonus: I remember reading that:

John Irving's grandfather was a doctor (and a professor of OB/GYN), and John learned a lot of the gynecological stuff from his grandfather's notebooks. AND John worked for a cider operation as a summer job when he was young, so he knows that of which he writes.
