Plague, because Hantavirus just wasn't scary enough
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 06:15 PM by MichaelHarris
Eight-year-old boy dies of plague

The nation’s first instances of human bubonic plague in 2009 were confirmed Thursday in two Santa Fe County siblings, one of whom died of the disease...Plague, which the department characterizes as a bacterial disease of rodents, can by transmitted to humans through fleas. http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S963137.shtml?cat=520

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a deadly disease from rodents. Humans can contract the disease when they come into contact with infected rodents or their urine and droppings. HPS was first recognized in 1993 and has since been identified throughout the United States. Although rare, HPS is potentially deadly. Rodent control in and around the home remains the primary strategy for preventing hantavirus infection.http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hanta/hps/

Damn, I need more duct tape, bottled water, and Twinkees. I thought I was prepared for the onslaught of brown people and now I got the Plague to worry about! Are assault rifles good for rats or will I need more power?

On edit: My wife just schooled me, she's a doctor and knows her stuff. She says Plague Hanta are different. I still want Twinkees and bullets though so I can feel safe.

1. Plague warnings go out every year
Especially in mountain areas.

When I lived in Carson City, NV, there were always warnings about squirrels and chipmunks being carriers of fleas with plague, and every now and then, a case of plague.

I'd be more concerned about hanta than the plague.

2. I remember
seeing warnings about mice and closed spaces like attics and stuff. Seems to be in more dry/desert areas though. Where I live now we have a coyote bloom. In 10 years I only saw one and now I see them every day. I love seeing them though, others just want to kill them.

9. Yes. I lived in Colorado for 20 years.
Knew one child who contracted plague. She survived with a course of antibiotics. My neighbor contracted hanta and died, despite extraordinary measures to save him.

I'll take the plague.

12. In a nation of 300 million people, a single plague death (or 50) are hardly an "epidemic."

But fear sells, so the MSM will spin it that way. "Be afraid, be very afraid!"

BTW, this "assault weapon" is good for rats, and squirrels as well.

It's even the Scary S Word.

13. Plague has existed in the rodents and squirrels out west
for a very long time.

I'm very sorry for that kid's death, but it's sadly not unusual. Plague can be cured now, IF it's caught early enough.
