In my rural community, unemployment was higher in the 80's.....however,

the jobs being lost were primarily those in the textile industries, primarily by women. Their husbands were employed in manufacturing, so even though the PERCENTAGES were high, the losses in family income weren't crushing, since the majority of the income came from those manufacturing jobs. ( Obviously, as always, single moms were the hardest hit)

Today, there are very few manufacturing jobs left; husbands and wives both working at Wal-mart or Lowes. When one is laid off, half their income dries up.

1. And to make things worse shoppers will dry up too
