Did the rise of the religious right introduce into society the precise mix of compassion, charity, and torture that are needed to make libertarianism a feasible program of political policy in a post-Victorian, industrial nation?

1. No.

Libertarianism is not a feasible program of anything, unless you are a Linux consultant, and there is already an overabundance of those. The religious right uses Windows 95 and AOL, exclusively, and are not a market for Linux consultants, who operate in a purely incestuous marketplace.

I'm glad I was able to clear that up for you.

2. The Libertarian argument seems to be that...

powerful religious groups should have the freedom to practice their religion, even when it involves the oppression of others. Taken to the extreme, it could mean that those who have the power, influence, and "God-given right" to run things should be allowed to run things. Anyone watch The Tudors?

3. The libbies don't trust the Goddies and vice-versa
If we could enact social programs that would end up greatly reducing the numbers of unwanted pregnancies (and therefore of abortions) we could probably win a lot of the Goddies over. In any case, we need to concentrate on convincing them to vote for the poor and peace rather than against gays and women -- and they're starting to.

4. In a sense, King Henry VIII was a staunch Libertarian...

in that he opposed the intrusion of the Catholic church on his freedom to divorce. He opposed the "Goddies" who represented the old religion. As a king who was in the process of adopting his own religion, he took the liberty to torture those who rebelled against him and to hang 100s of innocent women and children as an example to other rebels. "Libbies" don't always have the poor and peace as their top priorities.

5. Umm... libbies *never* have the poor and peace as top priorities
I was saying we can get a lot of conservative Christians to go along with us on poverty, health care, peace, etc.
