"Christian Civil Liberties Union" seeks "right" to.. burn books! (seriously!)
Milwaukee Group Seeks Fiery Alternative to Materials Challenge

<snip>

Milwaukee-area citizen Robert C. Braun of the Christian Civil Liberties Union (CCLU) distributed at the meeting copies of a claim for damages he and three other plaintiffs filed April 28 with the city; the complainants seek the right to publicly burn or destroy by another means the library’s copy of Baby Be-Bop. The claim also demands $120,000 in compensatory damages ($30,000 per plaintiff) for being exposed to the book in a library display, and the resignation of West Bend Mayor Kristine Deiss for “allow this book to be viewed by the public.”

The unanimous vote rejecting the Maziarkas’ challenge came after trustees heard several dozen comments for and against restricting the materials, as well as being presented with opposing petitions: 700 signatures on the petition circulated by West Bend Citizens for Safe Libraries, a group formed by the Maziarkas, and more than 1,000 on an anti-restriction petition from the newly formed West Bend Parents for Free Speech. Ironically, four of the trustees were denied reappointment in April by the city council because they did not comply with the Maziarkas’ reconsideration requests and are serving until their successors are appointed.

Accusing the board of submitting to the will of the American Library Association and the American Civil Liberties Union, Ginny Maziarka declared, “We vehemently reject their standards and their principles,” and characterized the debate as “a propaganda battle to maintain access to inappropriate material.” She cautioned that her group would let people know that the library was not a safe place unless it segregated and labeled YA titles with explicit content. However, after the meeting board President Barbara Deter emphasized that it was the couple’s “freedom of speech” to challenge any individual library holding...

5. I believe they have that right
As we have the right to burn a flag.

Having a right doesn't necessarily mean it's wise to exercise it.

6. With their own books, sure
But the books in their library aren't their sole property.

What I want to know is who told these pinheads where the library was in the first place? Because I'm pretty sure it's not a place they frequent on their own.

Somehow, my eyes managed to jump over "the library's copy," which is rather key.

I stand chagrined.

10. Well, you can burn your own flag
I think the difference here is they want to burn someone else's - or everyone's books.

Go home and as distasteful as I find it, and as stupid, burn your own book collection.

But hands off my town's library, thanks.

Which is doubtful.

They should never have the right to burn library books unless they plan on paying for what they've destroyed. And a hefty fine on top of that. Goddamnit. Keep your filthy hands off my library AND my uterus! God, I'm sick to death of your fascist fuckwits.

18. Council upholds punishment for members who refused to ban books, and a call to burn books!
By Blog of the National Coalition Against Censorship

On Monday night, The West Bend Common Council voted for a second time not to reinstate four members of the library board because of their views. The Council upheld its April 21st decision because of the board members’ refusal to remove controversial books from the young adult section of the library prior to a formal review. The board members are accused of promoting “the overt indoctrination of the gay agenda.” The challenged books include Baby Be Bop by Francesca Lia Block, The Geography Club by Brent Hartinger, and Stephan Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower ...

So, to recap, we have:

1. Library board members pushed out for their political/social views.
2. A lawsuit against public officials for doing their job.
3. Calls for a bonfire – of books. (And you thought Fahrenheit 451 was fiction!)

And, that’s even before the challenged books have been reviewed ...

20. Part of me wants to see them publicly burn the books...
...live on national television for everyone to see. The public revulsion toward the religious right would be well worth the $10 replacement cost for the book. Hell, I'll foot the replacement cost myself to see that burning event get put on national TV.
