Orrin Hatch: 'Democrats would live to regret it if they insist on a public plan.'
Old red-faced Orrin is spitting nails, along with his corporate suck-up pals, the Blue Dogs and ConservaDems.

"Democrats know that if they go to a totally partisan approach like the president has suggested they're going to eat that the rest of their lives," said Hatch, who circulated the letter to Obama.

"I'll be glad to help them, but not with a public plan," Hatch, referring to the Democrats, told Fox News.

About two-thirds of Americans now have private insurance coverage, the vast majority through job-based plans. But there is one government health program that enjoys widespread political support.

Medicare, created for seniors more than 40 years ago, has defied the predictions of critics that it would usher in an era of socialized medicine. Though the government controls every aspect of the plan, Medicare recipients enjoy a wide choice of doctors and hospitals.

Some Democrats want to set up a Medicare-like plan that would, for the first time, offer government coverage to middle-class workers and their families.

In the House, the 50 or so conservatives who make up the Blue Dog coalition argue that the government plan must look and work a lot like private insurance. It would be run by an outside contractor. And it couldn't compel hospitals and doctors to sign up, but would have to negotiate payment rates with providers. To stay solvent, the plan would have to rely on premiums, not taxpayer dollars. The House conservatives share many ideas with Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who has been looking for compromises in the Senate.

On the left, the 80 or so members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, contend that the public plan should be modeled on the Medicare program. It would be operated directly by the government and would use the existing framework of Medicare to keep costs low.

22. Actually I try and live my life to enjoy the things I have
Mobility, a somewhat working brain, good sensory input, my spouse and friends and cats.

But it is so easy to dislike and regret Orrin Hatch - requiring hardly any energy at all! - that I continue to do it! And recommend that others try it as well!

3. He's just afraid more people will "live"
People of a variety his ilk might not like. People not privileged enough to have health care.

4. Didn't a recent poll show that 73% of Americans WANT a public option?
Does anyone have a link?

9. I think the poll showed that the public option people want is single payer
but who listens to us? We can't finance campaigns or offer any high paying lobbying jobs to former members of Congress.

16. The numbers vary
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 04:36 PM by Juche
66%

73%

Only 15% think everyone should have private insurance and no public. Support for single payer is around 60%.

5. The only thing that worries me about single-payer is it will be at the mercy of
GOP regimes, just like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. We've all seen - especially those of us here in Florida - how the GOP likes to gut social safety net programs every chance they get.

If we can get single-payer, it needs to be structured so it will be difficult to cripple or dismantle. Otherwise, it will be vulnerable and leave even more Americans at risk of no health care.

6. Republican scare tactics & the stupid fucking Dems always believe the manipulating repugs bullshit.
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 03:30 PM by LaPera
Just as the Dems believed the republicans when they scared them into believing that the economy would be irreversible if they didn't bail out the incompetent banks and the CEO.

A "public plan" is the ONLY way to go...of course Hatch & the republicans are terrified that workers may get some for their tax dollars instead of going to corporations.

A public plan will be most efficient as is Social Security, unemployment insurances and so many government programs if the slimy republicans would stop sabotaging them whenever they are majority party stealing from the funds anything to appear that they don't work.

7. Republicans said the exact same thing about Social Security, the most successful public plan ever.
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 03:37 PM by GreenTea
Not a single republican voted for it - and the republicans have been trying to destroy Social Security ever since.

It clashes with republican ideology, that the over charging ineffective, cutting corners for profit corporations, inevitability collusive monopolies should be receiving our tax money instead, privatize for the corporations is the republican ideology and mantra!

8. Orrin Hatch's position is no surprise....
nor should it be. He raised $6,580,325 in campaign contributions in 2006. My guess is a significant amount came from the health insurance industry. I'll post the figure as soon as I find it.

10. Everything out of Republican mouths is projection.
The truth is, the Repulicans will live to regret it if the public option is passed. It will make President Obama more popular than he is already, which is something the Republians cannot afford.

13. True -- if you consider how many won't live if there is no adequate health coverage reform.
Regrets or not, let's first ensure the basis for American's being able to live.

23. Oh fer sure, Orrin
I regret all those old people living out their lives with dignity on social security. That pesky minimum wage. The 40-hour work week. Civil rights laws that put teeth into those niggling equal protection constitutional clauses. Man, there's a whole passel of things the Republicans just hate, Hate, HATE that we all regret in greater and lesser ways.

It's got to be a big job being on the wrong side of every progressive program, but the Republicans seem to have an inexhaustible supply of motherfuckery, serving their overrich masters whilst trying to screw the majority of the populace.
