Florida Legislature gives OK to ship inmates out of state

Sending criminals to out-of-state prisons is a 'safety valve' for Florida's overpopulated prisons.

With the inmate population hovering around 100,000 and the state lacking money to build new prisons, the Legislature has given the corrections department the authority to ship inmates to other states for the first time.

''It's a safety valve,'' says the plan's sponsor, Sen. Victor Crist, a Tampa Republican who oversees prison spending. ``This is not a mandate. It's a passive safety net.''

passive safety net

to Arizona for several years. There are now almost 900 of them out there. This seems particularly cruel since many of them are Native people who are not only far away from their families but in a climate that is particularly uncomfortable to them. I think it's very sad since so many of the crimes are fueled by alcohol. I worked in Corrections for a year back in the '80s and I knew a lot of guys who, even though they had committed serious crimes, were as nice as could be when sober -- intelligent, creative, and remorseful. So much more good could come from rehabilitation and prevention than from locking people up and throwing away the key.

3. We've been doing that in Vermont for years
and it really stinks. It imposes terrible hardships on families and it's generally very bad news for inmates.
