PETA doesn't want Seattle's fish tossers to perform at the Veterinarians' Convention
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 06:56 PM by Mrs. Overall
SEATTLE - PETA has taken a stand against one of the most popular tourist attractions in Seattle - the fish market at the Pike Place Market that tosses salmon.

PETA heard that the American Veterinary Medical Association asked some Pike Place Market fish throwers to be the opening act for their July 10 convention at the convention center. PETA sent a letter to the association saying people who care about animals are appalled fish would be treated as toys.

"We think it sends a terrible message to the public when veterinarians call it fun to toss around the corpses of animals," said Lindsay Rajt, a PETA spokeswoman in Norfolk, Va. "I think that PETA and the public would agree with us that veterinarians should be promoting compassion and not callousness toward animals."

"Fish feel pain and fear just like dogs and cats do and I don't think the AVMA would dare take part in the dead kitten toss. Really, morally, there is no difference between throwing around dead kittens and throwing around dead fish."

PETA has offered to replace all the dead animals with rubber fish instead.

1. "I think that PETA and the public would agree with us"
I think the fact that the fish market is a tourist attraction is pretty clear evidence that the public does not, for the most part, agree with PETA on this issue.

dead fish to dead kittens. Especially me.

17. Ooooo, Can I play?
I'll play the other end of the spectrum and complain about how evil it is to eat meat, whine about how persecuted I am as a vegetarian/vegan because people say dreadful things like "steak is good." Then I'll claim that PETA is "drawing attention to the cause" despite their continued sexism and other nutbuggery, including comparing meat producers to Klan members because we all know that any means justify the ends. I may even toss out an accusation of murder at omnivores.

19. LOL
Sorry, I just don't understand people who try to justify why it's OK to eat one animal while they lavish affection on another.

That was the reason I went vegan in the first place. I looked at my dogs and cats and decided I could never eat them, so how could I eat another creature in good conscience.

24. Plenty of people lavish affection on their gardens.
But it doesn't stop them from eating plants.

The fact that you lavish affection on a pet -- or on other human beings, which are animals, too -- doesn't have anything to do with the fact that humans are omnivores and most choose to eat some form of meat, fish, and/or poultry.

I mean the fish were caught/killed to be eaten. However, if they are instead being used as a show prop, and then thrown away, that is a waste.

49. Actually, no.
The fish thrown at the markets are props.

No good fishmonger is going to sell a thrown fish to customers. The fish used at Pike Place are fish that are not used for sale, either they're no longer fresh, or damaged during shipping, or specifically chosen as the prop fish.

57. For Commercial fishermen that actually catch the fish it is embarrassing
Commercial fishermen go to great lengths to make sure their fish are in perfect condition. That they are immediately refrigerated to stop bacteria and all scales are intact for appearance and to protect the meat. For people to toss these fish around and bruise the meat and knock the scales loose goes against everything fishermen try to protect.. I understand it is an attraction for the tourists but it is not good promotion for quality fish products...It destroys the quality of a really good product..and brings the price down for the Commercial Fisherman that is trying to make a living providing quality food for Americans.

54. I'm not really seeing anything incorrect about this statement:
"Really, morally, there is no difference between throwing around dead kittens and throwing around dead fish."

I could honestly care less what PETA does most of the time (unless they're doing something incredibly racist, sexist, etc.) because I have substantial philosophical differences with them, and I think Ingrid is a nutjob for reasons completely unrelated to the very admirable desire to promote veganism. Therefore, I don't support them financially or with my time, and what they do has very little impact on my life, but, what motivates the weekly two-minute hate on PETA on this site is something I'll never understand. All the red meat in the average DUers diet must just make them needlessly aggressive or something.
