Former Zeeland High School and University of Michigan football star Jay Riemersma has filed paperwork to run for the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra.

Publicly, Riemersma, a Republican, remains unannounced. But undated filings with the Federal Elections Commission declare him a candidate for the 2nd Congressional District.

Riemersma, an ex-Buffalo Bills NFL tight end and former Midwest director for the Family Research Council, did not return calls from The Press.

He joins former state Rep. and Republican Bill Huizenga, who announced his run for the seat last December. State Sen. Wayne Kuipers, R-Holland, has formed a committee to explore a run.

1. Movie star Presidents...comedian Senators..."big-time wrestling" Governors...
aging pop star Mayors.....

...why not an NFL Representative?

At least 80% of the public is willfully ignorant anyway...the latest American Idol could run for public office and win.

It's a sad, but very true, commentary on the state of our electorate.

3. I'm speaking of the process.
There will always be qualified ex-celebrities who actually deserve to hold office.

...but there's a problem when ALL one needs is celebrity...and I think that's where we are.
