California contemplates ultimate reform - no welfare

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/nation/story/69467.html

Could California become the first state in the nation to do away with welfare?

That doomsday scenario is on the table as lawmakers wrestle with a staggering $24.3 billion budget deficit.

County welfare directors are "in shock" at the very idea of getting rid of CalWORKs, which has been widely viewed as one of the most successful social programs in the state's history, said Bruce Wagstaff, director of the Department of Human Assistance in Sacramento.

"It's difficult to come up with the right adjective to react to this," Wagstaff said. "It would be devastating to the people we serve."

H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for the state Department of Finance, said California is in an unprecedented fiscal situation that has made all programs, from education to human services, vulnerable to deep and painful reductions.

9. yes, the Republican's gift in the last state budget
tax breaks to large companies based in CA

Their requirement for passing a budget.

Odd how repealing these breaks (which affect no individual's taxes) is never mentioned

6. I think we've hit the breaking point
I understand that some, even a lot of cuts are going to be necessary to make the budget balance. But eliminating welfare is ridiculous and needs to be off the table. I'm typically not one to have "a table", but this cannot be followed through with.

7. Herr Schwarzenegger has almost succeeded in his task. As a loyal
Republican his job was to bring down the greatest state in the union. He has almost got it to where he can drown it in a bathtub.

He's as good at bankrupting and ruining government as Bush was.

8. Here's a better idea instead of saying "fuck the poor"
Cut all corporate welfare, permanmently. If politicians preach the free market, let the free market happen, without corporate welfare.

10. My understanding is Denti-Cal will be cut permanently,
Edited on Wed Jun-10-09 11:40 AM by Kajsa
effective July 1,2009.

The only exceptions will be those under 21 yrs. of age,
those living in a nursing home and pregnant women.

I am very worried!

My son who has HS autism, needs his medication which
can only be obtained through a visit to his psychiatrist.

He's on SSDI and Medi-Cal.He works part time and goes
to school.

Will he be losing all his benefits?
No one can give me a straight answer-
they don't know, yet.

What will the disabled do?
They need their care!

12. The Republican economic model was designed to force a crisis so deep that
we have no choice but to gut social programs. Read "The Shock Doctrine."

and legacy payments.

Now Okalnd is thinking aobut filing bankruptcy. Gets them out of the retirement business.

14. Depressions take away options. Social engineering. Bad economic times
shift power to the rich. If done right the workers will be more compliant and will take whatever shit handed them. If done wrong, there will be insurrection.
