A Nebraska doc has vowed to pick up the fight in Kansas will offer services like Tiller's
OMAHA, Neb. - A Nebraska doctor says he'll perform third-term abortions in Kansas after the slaying of abortion provider George Tiller, even though Tiller's clinic is closed.

Dr. LeRoy Carhart declined to discuss details with The Associated Press on Wednesday, a day after Tiller's family announced his Wichita clinic was permanently shutting its doors.

Carhart isn't saying whether his plans include opening a new facility or offering the abortions at an existing practice. He says such details are "something that doesn't need to be talked about" until everything is in place.

1. I hope he gets plenty of security.
Preventing women from receiving medical attention at LEGAL clinics should be a federal offense.

2. It takes a very brave person to step into that breach.
There are many many women who will be thankful for the courageous.

3. He and his staff and his facility AND HIS FAMILY need to be under 24-hr
federal protection for the forseeable future. The terrorists will no doubt put him at the very top of their hit list, and they are not above hitting his family, too.

9. What a brave man, family, and staff.
I echo everybody's call for serious, massive protection. I wish there were a way to make a certain radius around the clinic private, giving legal recourse for keeping the nuts as far away as possible.

15. These procedures should only take place
in hospitals. Large hospitals. And no one should be given the name/location of the hospital until after they've been thoroughly screened and scheduled for the procedure. That would be with massive, 24/7 security for all staff and family members. These people are pure evil. The charges need to be the heaviest of criminal charges and with the longest possible sentences.

23. Unfortunately, that would raise the price for the procedure even higher.
One of the tactics used by anti-choice legislators is to require all abortion providers to be within a certain distance of a hospital, or require that abortion be reclassified as an inpatient procedure and only available in a hospital.

26. And it all
needs to change. Pro-choice, pro-women, legislators need to push back on anti-choice tactics.

Public awareness has been heightened by tragic circumstance. Dr. Tiller's murder can be used as an opportunity, and it should be. To makes new laws - revitalize and enforce The FACE Act - establish funding for both birth control and abortion services.

I guess it boils down to how much and how hard they/we are willing to fight.

27. no, women go for routine Gyno visits in hospitals, same price...clincs have ghettoized this
proceudre- they become lightning rods. The procedure is legal- hospitals shld be forced to offer it.
Law enforcement would provide better security and the whole process would be less stigmatized, marginalized...less targeted.

35. Most hospitals are for profit - clinics are more cost effective for many outpatient procedures .
I beg to differ - I was never able to get an affordable GYN exam from a provider in a hospital, but I was at a Planned Parenthood clinic. You cannot tell me that a hospital would have given them space that was as affordable as the strip mall that they were in.

My OB's office where I got my prenatal exams was near a hospital, but not in it.

Oral surgery, dermatological surgery, lasik, - they are done at facilities separate from hospitals. There are even freestanding birthing centers. I don't see a "ghettoization" of Dentists and dermatologists and optometrists. Many abortion providers are in these outpatient medical centers along with these other medical providers.

When seeking out a medical provider for a specific, specialize procedure, you are told to seek out an experienced provider who does this procedure as often as possible - ideally one that does nothing but this procedure.

Why should gynecologists be forced to rent incredibly limited, and therefore expensive space in a hospital for outpatient procedures that are no more risky than having a tooth pulled under anesthesia?? This is what PL lawmakers want. It limits access and the number of locations where a woman can go for an abortion.

It is not the job of law enforcement to stand guard at the entrances to medical facilities. They need to be investigating these wingnuts and haul them away when they violate FACE or are seen vandalizing clinics - like Roeder was.

Doesn't seem fair. That only a select few have to face death threats like this from something we all believe in.

18. Because the truth be told most Americans a quivering COWARDS! not our ...
Self perception, nor our cultural ideal, but that is the truth. Just look around you, we nearly collapsed when a couple of buildings were knocked down, yell, DISEASE and we run helter skelter light a flock of blind turkeys. No, the great majority are weak willed cowering wimps whose sole exhibition of bravery is when they gang up on one another over the mis-use of some currently in vogue politically correct term. Look in the mirror and look closely...chances are you fit that description...are you proud?

22. The spelling doesn't match, but the attitude sure does:

The official Carhartt Web site.
For 120 years, Carhartt has
created and manufactured premium
work clothing known for exceptional durability,
comfort, quality of construction, and fit that
you can feel in the fabrics and see in
the performance.

Exceptional durability in the medical profession? Check
Quality of construction (built of strong material)? Check
Comfort (knowing a really caring physician will get you through the worst day of your life)? Check
Fit (one clinic has closed, but another may be on the way)? Check

33. Basic questions that should precede any discussion of abortion
As we mourn the tragic murder of Dr. Tiller, it may be a good time to ponder the following basic questions that should be a guide in taking a position on the issue of abortion: When does human life begin? When does a fetus become a iving, human person? Is it at conception? Is at birth? Or is it some specific, definite point in between?

34. My basic question is "is this a necessary operation for the life or well-being of the person
carrying" and moreover "does the potential human stand a chance in hell if they are dead, brutally deformed, etc....". Just my opinion of course. I still think it is at times necessary and no one ever ever ever ever should make that decision for some one else. Particularly when it is a deep decision.
