Support our troops, pray for them
yep that is a real bumper sticker on the land tank of the person parked besides me today at the store.

So he comes back with groceries and I pointed to that bumper sticker. He said, "well we need to support them."

I smiled... "Support them yes, demand the government takes care of them when in the field with proper food, supplies, and logistical support. And make sure they are taken care off when they come home with a GI bill that works, and a VA system that is well funded and available."

"You have to understand they also need prayers."

"Have YOU sent a care package?"

Deer in the headlights look.

"Your prayers are doing nothing but make you feel good." I put my stuff in the trunk... He was about to say something when he FINALLY noticed the DOD sticker in the car.

That jaw hit the deck so hard it was funny to watch.

I ended up by telling him. "you want to make a REAL difference? go to anysoldier.com and send a care package, Join veteran organizations in demanding troops get taken care off. But your prayers are no support... except for you."

Of course the care packet, assuming he sends one, may include a bible or two... but as long as it also has some beef jerky I don't give a damn.

Oh and I don't expect a care packet from people like him to be honest.

1. The lack of understanding amongst the pious is striking.
So many really think they've accomplished something with a bumper sticker and a few good intentions.

2. Or a prayer... I know
but they need to be confronted. I mean Jesus... I almost went there, also told his flock to engage in good works and visit the sick and take care of the widow...

Yep, the good man was a damn commie

Locally we have a mega church now advertising on the teeveee... sickening

4. Department of defense, as a dependent of a retired USN Chief
we still get access to base, for the commissary and gas.

One of these days I'll try the salon too.

5. Liberals have supported my son during 3 tours
My son is a Marine with 3 tours to Iraq. During his tours, he received letters, packages, photos, books, CDs, videos, and, his favorite, children's drawings from many of our friends, all liberals. Meanwhile, our conservative friends would routinely grab us, look earnestly into our eyes, and tell us they were praying for our son. I do appreciate their thinking of my son. However, none took the time to send him a letter.
They also said some of the most amazingly naive things. Many said, before his first tour, "well, it will all be over before he gets there." Uh, not even close. Or "well, he's had his tour. He won't have to go back." Only two more times. With another tour looming.
Plus, the liberals here at DU kept me sane during his tours. You'll never realize how important your support has been to my family. We sent my son your posts. He read them to the other Marines. Your impact has been immense.

7. Next deployment send me the FPO
will put another care package in the mail

As a wife of a returned USN Chief I know how critical those care packets are.

Oh and here you go

HUGS... I know how hard is to have a loved one in the front lines

11. See? This is exactly what I'm talking about!
He even received a knitted cap from one of our DUers. Yes, it does get cold in Iraq, at night. And Afghanistan is brutal. One of our lovely DUers, who I've never met, sent him a knitted cap. We have wonderful people here.

12. Been trying to finish a scarf, but cannot get over it
no, not a knitter, meant for troops over there. I know it is cold there... damn hot in the day, and cold at night...

We are a community, but also we have a lot of vets, and families of vets, we get it.

(and I get it at both levels)

anymore. So it's that much more important that the rest of us donate.

10. Kick, recommend, and thanks for your service
Of course he is furiously divining a totally nuts-o rationale for how you are against America and HE is a real patriot.

Straight to the wingnut medicine tube for him I bet... TV News.

But can't figure out what he did wrong to deserve it? Maybe he prays they get to come home, as promised.

20. Perhaps because help involves far more than just
praying... try it sometime

anysoldier.com

Anysailor.com

anyairman.com

Go find a name, find an FPO and send a care package, The US mail has even a flat rate box, for less than ten bucks. The expensive part is filling the box with goodies. Books are VERY POPULAR, so is chapstick, beef jerky... and yes even batteries, pens, and paper. Did I mention foot powder?

21. Wonderful thread. My reservist son has been to Iraq once
and even though I know many have been way too many times, I hope he doesn't have to go back, and that makes me feel like a bad person. The guilt is ever present. My best wishes to stanwyck's son!
