Freepers Want Letterman FIRED!
I know I shouldn't have. Yes, I know better but I wandered over to FR and there are about a dozen threads on Letterman. Lists of his advertisers, DEMANDING Dave be fired, etc.

*sigh* Yeah, guess it's a slow news day for them, huh?

About Palin's daughter getting knocked up. I guess she's super sensitive since one of her daughters became a single mom.

45. The problem is that the joke was about the 14 year old daughter, not Bristol.
A joke about Bristol would be pretty much fair game if still a little tasteless.

That said, I think CBS will realize the protests are coming from people who don't watch Letterman anyway and limit their concern to the standard "we appreciate your comments, blah, blah, blah" letter.

I'll say this for Bush, Jr., he handled the mocking pretty well, and didn't go crybabying every time someone had some fun at his expense.

I can't say the same for his supporters, though, and Palin appears to be a crybaby herself. Why should she be exempt from mockery?

25. Letterman responds:
Taping tonight's episode of The Late Show, David Letterman took a few minutes to respond to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who called him "pathetic" in a radio interview after he made her and her family the butt of a recent Top 10 list. The late-night host had drawn particular fire from Palin and some pundits for a joke about one of Palin's daughters being impregnated by New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez during a trip to Yankee Stadium. Camp Palin apparently took the joke to be a crack against Palin's 14-year-old daughter Willow, who had recently attended a Yankees game, but Letterman insisted today that the real target was 18-year-old daughter Bristol.

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter ... and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight's show. "These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No." Saying he hopes he's "cleared part of this up," Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

Edited on Thu Jun-11-09 12:35 AM by Warren DeMontague
And, with their phony bullshit "family values" moralizing, AND by pissing away hundreds of millions of dollars on bullshit "abstinence only" programs, the GOP has also made a political issue out of the sex life of every other person in this country who doesn't only have sex missionary position, within the confines of a Christ-Centric Heterosexual Marriage, for the sole purpose of procreation.

They're the ones who want to put a policeman in every bedroom and uterus. So then David Letterman makes a joke about Bristol Palin, the "spokesperson for teen abstinence"? :eyes: ....Waaaaaaaah.

43. Willow
The 14 year old daughter was not previously "knocked Up". The Palin's used the opportunity to get some sympathy and to demonize a fierce critic of hers. Any fool dumb enough NOT to see that is hopeless.Someone mentioned that this is a typical tactic used by the Palin's. They expressed fake outrage over the lipstick on the pig remark as well. The Palin's can call those who they disagree pathetic (Letterman, Katie Couric, the MSM,etc) accuse Obama of hanging out with terrorist and so on, however when the same goes against her she can not take that which she dishes out (why is this thin skinned botch a politician?)

So no, it was not reasonable at all for the Palin's to be confused or mixed up.

48. Is that confirmed that Willow was at the game?
Or did Palin, shrewedly, decide to use the 14-yr. old as the target of the joke since that is more appalling than having the 18-yr. as the target. There seems to be confusion on whether Willow was at the game. Or if Palin "placed" her at the game in order to double-down on Letterman's stupid joke.
Was Willow actually at the game?

44. Uh.... Let's see...
Yes they do.

The daughter who is going on the TV in a whirlwind of self promotion declaring herself to be an expert on abstinence who had a baby because she did the horizontal mambo with her dumb and dumber star boyfriend opened herself up to being used as part of a late show monolog. Chelsea Clinton was a little girl living in the WH when Captain jerkoff Limbaugh attacked her.

Did Chelsea Clinton get on a jet and fly to NY to do all the morning shows to talk about how not to get pregnant?

Nope.

So... guess your cute little theory about Letterman being a doucehbag is just more fake moral outrage.

While I don't condone what Letterman said, Chelsea was 13 years old when Rush called her the "White House dog".
Bristol is 18 and was 17 and pregnant when she was proudly brought up on stage at her mother's rallies and the Rep. National Convention.
No comparison.

"Being 17 or 18 should not make one an automatic target."

Tell that to Rush Limbaugh who called Chelsea Clinton a dog.

Tell that to Sarah Palin who paraded her children around during the campaign, including her baby who was not even a year old. Why is it OK for Sarah to make them a target but no one else?

Anyone who is dumb enough to fall for this old Palin trick accusing Dave of advocating rape of a 14 year old is dumber than Sarah Palin is. Are you serious? Look at her track record. Its an old trick desperate politician use in hopes some fool will be dumb enough to fall for it.

40. Just saw a clip of Letterman's "jokes" this morning
I'm really surprised at those of you who are dismissing or even laughing at Letterman's jokes about Palin's 14 year old daughter. Not only were they in poor taste but he was totally lacking in judgment. He most certainly should have apologized but the apology I saw this morning was both insincere and snide.

It's one thing to make jokes about very public figures such as politicians -- comes with the territory. But tasteless attacks on a child who didn't ask for any of this is cowardly. Shame on those of you who think kids are fair game for public humiliation, no matter who their parents might be.

It should be overwhelmingly clear to you that it was about her 18 year old daughter who has been very much in the national spotlight for the past half year. And I don't consider an 18 year old to be a kid. Comedians make jokes, get used to it. It was funny.

I think it's funny that he made a comment like that regarding the daughter of a politician who spews all of her holier than thou rhetoric whenever she can, who got pregnant underage because her mother refuses to acknowledge that the policies she advocates are full of shit. If you ask me again tomorrow, I'll still think it's funny. As she's demonstrated so frequently over these past several months, she's not immune to the spotlight.

She inserted herself into the public eye and has to deal with what follows.

And as ignorant as they are, the Palins knew darn well that Dave was talking about their knocked up daughter and not the 14 yo.

Slutty might have been a bad choice of a word, but she is playing up the sexy librarian/stewardist stereotype and the GOP used her for that reason. It certainly wasn't her brain or policy knowledge.
