Ariz. sheriff under scrutiny wants tables turned

By JACQUES BILLEAUD

PHOENIX -- A lawyer for an Arizona sheriff who has aggressively cracked down on illegal immigration has asked for a probe of federal officials who are investigating the sheriff's office for alleged discrimination and unconstitutional searches.

Robert Driscoll, a lawyer for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, said in a letter that Department of Justice investigators conducting the civil rights probe improperly shared documents with the Department of Homeland Security, which is auditing Arpaio's use of federal immigration powers.

"They are not playing fair," Arpaio said Tuesday. "There is a political motive behind all of this _ and ethical violations. Right now, I'm fighting back."

Arpaio said both examinations are focused on his immigration enforcement efforts, which include arresting more than 1,000 illegal immigrants under a state smuggling law and setting up a hot line to report immigration violations. Arpaio also has led crime and immigration sweeps in some heavily Latino areas in metropolitan Phoenix.

Critics say deputies racially profiled people during the immigration sweeps and that Arpaio abused the powers that the federal government gave dozens of his deputies to make immigration arrests. Arpaio said people pulled over in the sweeps were approached because deputies had probable cause to believe they had committed crimes. ..........(more)

10. What's a joke about it?
Not that I'm disagreeing with you, please don't think that. I hate Joe Arpaio. I'm just curious about what a little insider perspective on his jails are like, is all.

4. Our NM sheriff was called on this
Our sheriff is still publicly saying they did nothing wrong after this:

EL PASO — A federal lawsuit claiming that Otero County, N.M., sheriff’s deputies were involved in racial profiling, unlawful stops and other civil-rights violations while targeting undocumented immigrants in Chaparral has been settled, activists said Wednesday.

The Otero County Sheriff’s Department agreed to a settlement of $100,000 and changes to its operational procedures, which activists said would help eliminate fears that deputies are enforcing federal immigration laws.

The lawsuit stemmed from incidents in which deputies allegedly harassed and interrogated residents and searched homes in Chaparral while trying to find undocumented immigrants in 2007 and 2008 as part of the federally funded Operation Stonegarden.

“We wanted to make sure what happened in Otero in 2007 would not happen again,” said Fernando Garcia, executive director of the Border Network for Human Rights. “I would say this policy is unprecedented.”

13. Arpaio must be one of those "responsible white separatists".
From a WP article about the Holocaust Museum assailant:
De Nugent(an acquaintance of von Brunn, and self-described white supremacist) called von Brunn a genius but described the shooting as the act of "a loner and a hothead."

"The responsible white separatist community condemns this," he said. "It makes us look bad."
