I try not to think of that place. Not always successfully, it seems.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't mean to post a blind link. It's a Wiki article on the self-immolation of the Bhuddist monk. Props to Buzz Clk for pointing out my error.

1. The link leads to a story about the monk who burned himself in Vietnam.
Those were interesting times.

12. Turns out not to be Chinese, apparently
Not to digress (much), but there is some discussion about the origins of "may you live in interesting times."

"An Ersatz Chinese Proverb":
I have never come across it in Chinese proverb dictionaries... found this site and this site that pretty clearly demonstrate its American and British lineage.

IMWTK.

5. Thanks. I had thought the self-immolation was in protest of the US-Vietnam

but I just learned from the link that it was about the South Vietnamese's treatment of Buddhists.

7. Pretty much the same thing
We were propping up the government that was mistreating the Buddhists. Catholicism was the approved religion under French colonialism. We took over from the French after Dien Bien Phu. Our puppet governments were all drawn from the colonial Catholic elite, and they persecuted Buddhists for political and religious reasons.

that picture and the pistol-execution of the VC prisoner are etched in my memory.

11. Oh, yea. And the little naked girl running down the road crying.
Those days were awful and so was that war. Awful.

15. I suppose it makes for a hot protest. But it was also custom,
or still is in many parts of at least India, for the woman, if her husband dies.
Gruesome, sure, but common.
