The difference between us (the Progressives) and the Right-Wing can be found in the Bible
and that's for all of us Progressives whether or not your actually believe in Jesus existance because some of the strongest athiests at DU have show more faith, more of the ways of Jesus than any right-wing nut job ever has.

I found this trying to show, in another thread, the difference between Paul vs. Jesus. It was a good explaination of how Paul had contridicted many of Jesus' teaching over and over again. But Paul never met Jesus and was probably one of thousands of people who were out there actively converting people to Christianity - what maid Paul so special?

Anyhow, at the bottom was a comparison of what Jesus said about the hungry and what Paul said. And when you read those 2 sections you'll see the clear difference between what we as liberals fight for (which mirrors what Jesus did some 2000 years ago) vs. what the Right-Wingers want.

Jesus on the Hungry:
Matthew 25:35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Paul on the Hungry:
2 Thessalonians:10For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat

1. On a similar note
liberals know the constitution is a shield, conservatives believe it is a weapon to be used against fellow citizens who don't conform to their conservative valued view of the world.

Christian Conservatives should hope that Jesus doesn't come back anytime soon.

3. And they'd better hope that the Constitution isn't revived anytime soon.
But, then, they're fighting their best against that.

2. This the the essence of what it means to be a Christian
and what is always ignored by conservatives.

4. I saw a bumper sticker a while back and it said.
JESUS IS COMING And boy is he pissed.
And that about sums it up for todays so called christians.
they have completely ignored the Master (Jesus) and now follow the servant (Paul) who was an administrator not a teacher.

5. The bumper sticker I like said
"Jesus is coming, everybody look busy."

for southerners:

"Honk once if you're Elvis, honk twice if you're Jesus."

6. I used to wonder about the right-wing disconnect with what Jesus
was really all about until I realized that there are really two Jesus's.

The first Jesus was all meek and mild, caring about the sick and the poor, trying to save people.

But he died. Rose again and went to heaven.

The Jesus that is supposed to come back is nowhere like the first Jesus. When Jesus comes back he will have a sword of flame spouting out of his mouth and he will scorch the earth and burn it and it's residents to hell.

The second Jesus is mad and angry. That's the Jesus they identify with. And in their warped minds they have nothing to fear because they've already passed the test and won't be burned like the rest of us. They have no pity on anyone else and neither does the second Jesus. We all deserve our lot. Jesus doesn't care so why should they?

8. that second 'jesus' is purely a work of fiction
And Paul is just a random writer of the hundreds of 'Pauls' that helped spread Christianity throughout the kingdom.

7. "Compassionate Conservatism" (TM) is really
"See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya."

Compassionate Conservatism means financial ruin if you or family get sick or hurt (if you're lucky). It means living under a bridge and eating rats if you loose your job.

Really, what part of Compassionate Conservatism even pretends to be compassionate?

10. Your Thessalonians quote is a little out of context.

2 Thessalonians 3:10 - 15 (NASB)

10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.
11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies.
12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.
13 But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary of doing good.
14 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame.
15 Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
