McCain defends Palin against Letterman joke
McCain defends Palin against Letterman joke

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican Senator John McCain has a message for late-night comic David Letterman: Enough with the jokes about Sarah Palin and her family.

The host of CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" drew the ire of Palin this week by making jokes about her visit to New York last weekend.

snip...
"I don't understand why Letterman would say that about a young woman," McCain said during a telephone interview on Thursday. "They (the Palins) deserve some kind of protection from being the butt of late-night hosts."

16. here...
snip...
Of the Palins' trip to New York, Letterman joked that "the hardest part of the trip was keeping Elliot Spitzer away from her daughter."

"I'm surprised we haven't heard from Elliot Spitzer either," he said. "I'm not necessarily proud of these jokes. It's a joke, that's all it's supposed to be, that's all that is."

As for joke No. 2: "Sarah Palin went to a Yankees game yesterday, there was one awkward moment during the seventh-inning stretch: Her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez."

"I recognize that these are ugly," Letterman explained. "These are borderline, but again, an act of desperation to get cheap laughs, which is what I've been doing the last 30 years. Why didn't we hear from Alex Rodriguez?"

15. Considering Palin has two daughters, one of which was knocked up as an
unwed teenager, it was pretty obvious which one the joke was about.

If Palin really wanted to protect her daughters from things like this, she would have never exposed them and used them to her advantage as she did. Perhaps the joke was in slightly bad taste, but fair game nonetheless.

19. The 18 year old daughter basically made herself a public figure
going on TV and talking about teen pregnancy. You can claim to be a private person and then go on TV and advocate public policy. The joke was crude and not really funny to me, but certainly was in bounds within the general rules of comedy.

"Whore" is too good a word. As Shannyn Moore puts it "Doing business with Exxon is like letting the guy who date raped your daughter rent your basement. But, hey, at least we have a tenant." http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/palin-matchmakes-for-a-gasline/

Watch for lots of crowing from the Palinistas now about her precious, precious gas line. :puke:

36. I understand that.
All I am saying that most people would not know which kid they are taking to which function. Or even if she had her kids at the game with her. Most would assume Letterman was talking about the eldest daughter. If it was left alone by the Palins, the 14 year old wouldn't have to of been brought into this. IMO anyway.

I agree that the joke was in bad taste. But, Letterman isn't the first comedian that has gone too far, and he won't be the last. I wonder if he will have anything further to say on the subject.

8. for what it is worth, so does Somerby
http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh061009.shtml

"Letterman isn’t at NBC any more—but he’s still part of the clan. He’s also a familiar figure in our culture. He’s the smelly, 62-year-old coot who never arranged to grow up.

Boys like Letterman never grow up. Inside their brains, hard wires keep telling them to aim naughty jokes at 14-year-old girls—and to refer to women as “slutty.” The Greenwich guy did it again Monday night. People like this never stop.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this whole syndrome is the way the “liberal” world has accepted it."

"During the 1990s, the liberal world ran off and hid in the woods, hoping that pseudo-conservative rule would come to an end by itself. (If liberals complained, their careers could be damaged! You would have kept quiet too.) For that reason, its toleration of smutty misogyny aimed at Hillary Clinton just seemed like part of the deal. (When the press corps spent a month aiming smut at Naomi Wolf, only Kristol and Safire responded.) But in this decade, a larger pattern has become rather clear: There is no “sexual politics” in the progressive world. Not a discernible morsel."

13. They are trying to stifle Letterman, and prevent him from ever making
Palin jokes again. They may have succeeded. He really cannot "win" this one, and they know it. The jokes were lame, and Palin & Co have created enough of a shitstorm now, that he has no way to undo it. He can only "retire" the Palin jokes, whick is what they wanted..

He has learned a valuable lesson here, republicans are "allowed" to say anything about anyone, and democrats are not.

he may have fucked the joke up but it was the 14 year old who attended the game, once he realised that he should of at least apoligised rather than try to be a smart ass. cant believe the number of people on DU who dont see why a parent might be pissed over this joke on their daughter, i know i sure as hell would be mistake or not.

I seriously doubt that anyone has to worry about Letterman sneaking in & molesting their daughter.. don't buy into the faux outrage.

The Palins are NOT paragons of family values..this is totally political. They have been "using" their family for politcal gain , when it suits them, and basically ignoring those kids the rest of the time. Tawwwd, is gone most of the time, so's she. Those kids raised each other. Sarah trots them out as props, when it suits her

"People" say a LOT of things I don't "agree with", but going apeshit loony and beating that dead horse for days-on-end and trying to silence other people is not very democratic, now is it.

The Obama girls are CHILDREN..and they are the president's children...(presidents usually get a pass from the press when it comes to their children). Failed candidates who prop themselves up ON and who USE their children, often do not get the same courtesy. DAVE WAS NOT MEANING THE 14 YR OLD, AND WE ALL "KNOW" THAT...so does sarah :)

Remember.. Sweet Sarah apparently told the kids about the veep-think ON THE PLANE to go accept it in public. Not quite the way a caring mom would break the news to her "mono-stricken" pregnant teenager, who was about to be thrust into the national spotlight.. I'll take Dave's parenting skills over hers , any day.

In any case, I'm sure that Dave wishes he had nixed that whole Top Ten.. you DO know that he's not the ONLY writer:) I think he will just write HER and her whole wacky family off, since she's going nowhere fast anyway:)

32. Oh, so if a politician wins, then the kids are off-limits.
But if a candidate loses, then the children are fair game. Gotcha. Especially jokes about impregnating daughters. Okay.

If Letterman MEANT the 18-year old teenager, then he should have said so, though it wouldn't have made any sense, since it was the 14-YEAR OLD who was at the game in New York. Maybe Dave needs better fact checkers, as well as better joke writers.

35. I will agree on the joke writers idea. Many "jokes" are not funny
and the Top Ten was in poor taste, but it's NOT anything more than lazy writers, writing lazy jokes...like how he (and others) are STILL doing Clinton jokes.
Won't matter much in the long run.. the folks who did not like Dave, STILL won't..and the ones who like Dave, still will.

and Sarah will still be the biggest "joke" of all.

54. If Obama were to begin touting
abstinence only, and one of the kids got pregnant at seventeen, and then proceeded, when she turned eighteen, to do the talk show circuit promoting abstinence only (calling her child a "horrible mistake") I would not have a problem with Letterman cracking a joke.

Bristol has put herself up as a public figure in her own right. She is fair game. The fact that she is a politicians child doesn't give her a free card. If it did, then all cheap jokes about both Bush's are off the table. Jokes about Al Gore- off the table. Whatsername McCain--off the table. Bristol is no longer a child. The free pass is over. Its a very tough game, and if you don't have a very tough skin, you shouldn't be playing. And Bristol (about whom the joke in question was really about) has jumped into the game willingly.
