Local Television News Sucks, where can I find real local news
I don't watch local television news much and usually switch to it as background noise, because it's the same pattern over and over. Major murder of the day, routine car accident, routine criminal incident, routine fire, uncredited health study, news stores that are no local to the area, latest celebrity event of the day, plus weather and traffic every 15 minutes.

There is absolutely little if any coverage of real local hard news: What your state and local governments are doing, civic events, local economic news, civic events, real investigative reports (I don't mean consumer investigations, real muckraking investigation). (The DTV switchover will do absolutely nothing about local news at all)

So what is the best source for REAL local news?

(For an additional challenge:
Hard Mode: No internet
Very Hard Mode: No Newspaper.)

P.S. I'm not trolling

2. My local Public Radio station has local news every hour
and longer programs about local politics and events several times a week.

3. No exaggeration...nowhere....
I'm completely with you. You can watch local TV news for decades, and know absolutely nothing about your city, your local government, or anything. I have no idea how the situation has got as bad as it has, but EVERY LOCAL TV show, in any city, is basically a cookie cutter copy of what is being said every night in every town.

This is where newspapers used to come in, but I think once we have some perspective, we will realize that local TV killed newspapers, not the internet.

As far as being an expert, I think you need to be a city hall, police blotter hawk, and comparative state/local government PhD, to really 'know' your town.

It's scary to me. No one really seems to care.

4. I'm afraid you just explained the sad truth.
Even local/regional news in Britain is better than this.

9. Oh wow, coming from the UK would be a shock to me.
That Sky News tone is pretty much the norm over here.

Indymedia is decent, but it is not a one stop shop.

There has been a real maniac focus in the US on what happens in Washington only, which probably explains how bitter some of the resentment about 'government' in a lot of the country.

5. I agree.
I only watch for the weather. I'm sick of video of car crashes. Plus they are more into a local corporate (chamber of commerce) POV than I remember, or am willing to put up with anyway.

8. Local news always sucks. They are too rah-rah and in the sack with local businesses

the same as the msm but on a local level. Local anchors are the worst, too. When some local tragedy happens they practically are in tears telling the story then a minute later they turn to the weather man with a big smile and begin joking. And local morning achors are the worse of the worse.
