A righty starts to get it: no summer school program to babysit his kid
My fiancee teaches in a very conservative county and a parent who is otherwise a stereotypical righty is aghast that the summer school program that usually keeps his kid from being unsupervised is canceled this year.

''How can they take this out on the kids?'' he lamented.

I told my fiancee to tell him to find out who his likely Republican state legislator is.

She said it was too late to convince him to bring the program back.

I said, ''Yes, but it's not to late to leave the kid with the legislator all summer.''

1. Well, guess what, Pubbies!
Services cost $$! Pay your fair share of taxes and we're cool.

2. Leaving the kid with a Repug legislator over the summer
would really be taking it out on the kids!

Probably know WAY more than the parents after one month with a Repub legislator.

4. A teacher from another school district was telling me that his ISD has
a special summer school program going on because of a govt grant. It isn't Special Ed, either, but summer schools with math and science emphasis for half days for two or three weeks, another for Language Arts emphasis, etc. Pretty cool, huh? I have to pay for my younger son's academic summer activities, which consist of music, etc. I bet my ISD didn't even bother applying for a grant.

This is in Texas.

After all, that is what conservatives believe in!
Public school is socialistic anyways.

9. Doesn't this guy realize the state of California finances right now?
Services are begin cut all over and it's going to get a lot worse very very soon. Maybe now that these budget cuts are hitting home, the populace might wake up and do the right thing. But then, who wants to pay taxes? It's so sad that the connection between taxes and services has been lost in the minds of so many people.

14. Yeah, he only thought it would kick people off of welfare
and deny medical care to children. That didn't bother him, no doubt. Now it hits him and duh! Wait until he sees class sizes next school years.

17. I think it's actually a good thing.
Not that the program's being cut, but that working-class Republicans/conservatives are finally going to feel the results of all those tax cuts they've been bamboozled into voting for since the Reagan years.

The schools are not meant to be a private baby sitter... remember --- it's a form of socialism anyway. All property owners paying into the socialistic system... Be a real man and quit yer bellyachin'
Make that lazy kid of yers get a job and work his way through summer - it builds character and all.

Love,
Your Underpaid Teacher

p.s.

Leaving the poor kid with a politician all summer seems a bit harsh. But I do see your point.

Several years ago Denver began limiting nurses in public schools, and the Rocky Mountain News did a short interview with a conservative parent. The father said that, as a good Republican, he usually opposed bond issues but that his son took medication and dad thought that money should be found to pay for nurses in schools because his kid would benefit. No apology, very up front that he was only willing to support programs that benefited him and his kid... :grr:

Edit for spelling.

26. I remember summer school...
...and when I wasn't having to make up a stupid math class, it was FUN!
Took an Arts and Crafts class, a sewing class and some of my best memories center around Teenage Drama Workshop.
Set building, costume making, lighting, learning lines, songs, dances...anywhere from one to three plays were put on every summer, depending on the size and complexity of the musical.

(Sound Of Mucous Music stood alone, while Annie, Get Your Gun was companioned by two matinees for (and starring) the younger kids: Rumpelstiltskin and Pinnochio and the Indians.

Parents loved it...got their teenagers out of the house, and into a safe, busy, demanding environment where we not only had a blast, but learned a LOT.
Resulting shows weren't half-bad either.

And all this was paid for (although I didn't know it at the time) TAXES! :wow:
