You can't buy cutlery on Ebay.uk anymore...
Wonder when USA will adopt this rule?

From the site:
http://www2.ebay.com/aw/uk/200902231205572.html

From 10th March 2009, all knives and swords except cutlery will be banned from sale on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie. The definition of cutlery includes those implements which can be used for eating, including cutlery sets, individual pieces of cutlery and antique cutlery.

All other items, including knives used in the preparation of food will be banned, including (but not limited to);
# antique knives
# bread knives
# craft knives
# Stanley knives
# camping/ survival/ hunting knives
# diving knives
# kitchen knives
# Swiss Army knives and Leathermans
# all swords

Anyone know why they did this??????

Under the new policy buyers will be asked to enter credit card details if they attempt to bid on or buy any item of cutlery in the new cutlery category. These details will need to be provided again after six months if the buyer seeks to buy or bid again.

22. Not if you _intend_ to use it for self-defense.
"The law does not recognise the concept of a "defensive weapon". You are not permitted to use an offensive weapon - even to defend yourself. You may, however, provided it constitutes reasonable force, defend yourself with an ordinary everyday object, such as keys, an umbrella or a comb, provided you have them with you for their ordinary everyday purpose. 9. They have a serious problem with knife crime among youth, particularly in Scotland
that probably has something to do with this. Goodness knows a bunch of 15-year-old glue sniffing yobs probably get most of their weapons online :sarcasm:

12. They don't say you can't buy cutlery. They're saying you can't buy swords, etc.

From 10th March 2009, all knives and swords except cutlery will be banned from sale on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie. The definition of cutlery includes those implements which can be used for eating, including cutlery sets, individual pieces of cutlery and antique cutlery.

They are simply not going to sell swords or knives other than those that are considered tableware.

15. It doesn't say they are forbidding the type of bread knife you lay next to the plate
"Those used in the preparation of food"

Like this one;

As opposed to a "bread" knife used on the table, like this one;

So are you saing it makes sense to ban everything but silverware?

19. I'm not saying anything of the sort.
I merely attempted to point out the OP has mis-characterized the gist of the notice posted by Ebay UK.

dixiegrrrrl said in her title message line that "You can't buy cutlery on Ebay.uk anymore..."

That is clearly NOT what the Ebay notice says.

I am not passing judgment on Ebay for a decision they are free to make. I'm merely stating a fact.

29. That's why I put the word "bread" in quotes.
This is a bit silly, I must admit, but you're right, the pic of the table knife isn't a bread knife at all, it's simply a dinner knife.

Dinner knife;

Butter knife;

(Neither of which seems to be banned by Ebay)

Bread Knife;

Banned for sale on Ebay UK

Fine...I think I've beat this horse hard enough.

20. knives are age restricted, even table knives
There was a story a few months ago about the age restriction and cutlery sales, including table settings, in the UK. Sorry I do not have the link, but this new ebay restriction is probably related to that.

21. LOL
I'm in the UK.......when I opened this thread........popping out all over the place are ads to buy knives at various websites in the UK.

This is just about as stupid as when all the pubs banned beer mugs because the odd drunk would occaisionally whack another drunk upside the head with his beer mug. Now we all drink out of pint glasses........and some do gooders want to ban those in favor of plastic glasses.
