1. Couple things I disagree with in that statement
1. Lusting doesn't make you a pervert. People who suppress all natural urges until they come out in weird ways are perverts (but even they aren't too bad, depending on what they do). Think Larry Craig who hated gays, then tried to get sex in an airport bathroom or the evangelical pastor who used to do meth and have gay sex while condemning those things the next day in sermons.

2. McCain picked Palin to appeal to wingnuts and Hillary voters. I don't think it was lust.

10. he picked her to appeal sexually to wingnuts though
one of the reasons he picked her is so the wingnuts would see he had a "hawt" partner

3. I don't think John McCain picked Palin...
It was obvious he didn't know her.

The neocons were smitten with her. They'd been dining at her house in Alaska and
socializing with her during intimate dinners, for quite some time. Just ask Bill
Kristol and the rest of the warmongering gang. They ordered this. They got it.

McCain wanted Lieberman, and his party told him to stuff it.

4. Nonsense. He made a cold calculation that male voters would lust over her . . .
Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 11:04 PM by MrModerate
And thus save his doomed campaign (you don't think he knew he was already screwed when he named her?), and that "soccer moms" or some such demographic would just luuuuuv her 'cause she was "just like them."

Like most other cold calculations he and his campaign made, that one was dead wrong. She turned out to be trailer trash with the wisdom of a turnip and the morals of a marmoset, actively alienating whole swathes of the electorate.

I'm really, really glad he's not making cold calculations from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue right now.

5. That was part of it, but he was also trying to woo the Hilary crowd
AND placate the Fundies. On the one hand he succeeded, but anyone who thinks someone like Sarah Palin measures up to Hilary Clinton is a fool.

6. If so, he's stupider than he looks. Even the crazy PUMA crowd choked on Palin.
And he had the fundies already. It's not like they were going to vote for Obama. He counted on Palin to open their wallets and get their assess off the couch on election day, and she might have actually done that -- at the cost of wrecking his campaign with anyone with brains.

9. McCain most likely would have lost even without Palin
His campaign was dead in water prior to his selection of her.

15. Agreed. I can't think of anyone who would have helped . . .
Colin Powell in a pinch, I suppose, but Powell doesn't like to get his hands dirty that way and wouldn't have said yes. Lieberman would have been as much of a disaster as Palin, just lots less entertaining.

19. Replacing McCain himself would have helped....
but frankly, I can't think of a single Republican who could have beaten the Obama juggernaut.

8. I don't know - I've seen a few that have put
Palin and Clinton together as pure gold - it seems to be a "woman" thing - that any woman politician is worth fighting for. Clinton, I would agree. Palin? She's a disgrace and embarrassment to any intelligent woman out there.

24. Lust is probably too strong a word.
Palin was chosen for being pretty. She had girl-next-door good looks; it was probably only a few wingnuts who drooled over her.

25. When I originally read the post title, I thought it was a
satirical spin on the current Repug Letterman spin:

"David Letterman is a pervert (/pedopile) for joking about Palin's young daughter."

Then, I read the responses in the thread. Just out of curiousity, was it satire, or were you serious?

27. Even if McCain had picked her because of a personal lust fufillment....
...I would not consider it perverted.

As it turn out, I think McCain was banking on and got an initial hit from the normal lust of many male Rep constutuents. There was no hope of getting new guys to the party, this was a strategy to try and use Palin as a finger in that leaking dam. I think wives and partners set the lustful ones straight, in quick order. Trying to appeal to the presumambly disenfranchised Hilary supporters was a huge gamble that didn't even get close to paying off. The transparency in that strategy was patheic and shallow.
