Nancy Pelosi says the House will not pass health care reform without a public option
By John Amato Saturday Jun 13, 2009 10:00am
Nancy Pelosi is stepping up to the plate in her support for a good public option.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the Huffington Post Thursday that a health care overhaul that did not include a public option wouldn't make it through the House because it "wouldn't have the votes."

At a press conference earlier in the morning, Pelosi had been asked if including a public plan that would compete with private insurance was "essential" to health care reform. "Can you have effective health care reform without a public option?" a reporter asked.

The goal, she responded, was affordability and accessibility. "If you have another way to do that, put it on the table. And that's where we are. Everything should be on the table," she said.

The open-ended answer led some reporters after the press conference to wonder if she was backing off her statement to MSNBC Wednesday that a bill without a public option wouldn't get out of the House.

Not at all, she said. Asked by HuffPost if she would allow a reform package without a public option out of the House, she responded: "It's not a question of allow. It wouldn't have the votes."

1. "Everything should be on the table"
That's rich, considering what she took off the table a couple years ago!

4. I'm not cheering until I see what form that public option will take. So

far from what's leaking out of Congress, it appears to be a government funding to give to people to buy insurance. It appears to be another big money bonanza to the insurance industry and the same old for profit leeches for the consumer. Why do I feel the patient is getting kicked in the ass again?

6. I Hate To Tell Ya...
...but insurance and real estate and oil own the country. They always have.

This is not Europe and it's not going to be. Even in Canada, single payer had to be literally shoved down the doctors' throats by the courts. That won't happen here.

This is what happened in 1993. This is how it's gonna be.

7. Welcome to DU, however,
I think we are all aware of that. However, now we have to figure out how to take our country back. The shoving down the throat bit has a certain amount of appeal. "Hey Nancy, open wide, here comes the single payer airplane."

5. There's...
...not going to be a bill. The banking and auto bailouts were more expensive than anticipated and this week the AMA said no joy. The bond market is starting to rebel and we're seeing mortgage rates go up, which will make the housing situation even worse.

Then, a year from now, we're gonna be in the middle of the House and Senate races.

It's done. We took care of the banks and put two thirds of corporate Detroit into bankruptcy.

8. Let's remember what Bush taught us: Calling it something good don't mean it is....
A "public option" may turn out to be total crap with a nice name.

Keep pushing for single-payer, in any case.

9. She's been good lately. If she keeps this up..
I won't think about her taking impeachment off the table as much.
