More Concealed Weapons Permits Could Be Issued
Sacramento County Sheriff Considers Move Amid Budget Cuts

POSTED: 11:19 am PDT June 15, 2009
UPDATED: 12:04 pm PDT June 15, 2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Faced with the potential loss of 300 deputies due to budget cuts, the Sacramento County sheriff may consider issuing more concealed weapons permits.

Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness said at a public budget workshop in May that if the cuts happen, people would wait "long, long periods of time for the most basic public safety services, specifically uniformed officers in the field."

Spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran called the move a worst-case scenario, depending on how the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors allocates money in its budget.

"With the anticipated decrement in patrol staffing, and the resultant potential for inadequate patrol officer staffing, I will have to reconsider the criteria for issuance of CCWs . Nothing is etched in stone, but as circumstances change, we need to address public safety in an environment with too few patrol officer positions to meet traditional expectations," McGinness said in a statement.

The current criteria for permit applications is as follows: one-year residency in Sacramento County, U.S. citizenship, at least 21 years of age, no criminal history, and successful completion of a handgun training class.

1. As of 4 years ago, the county where I live had well over
25 thousand residents licensed to carry a firearm. We have never had "blood in the streets", in fact the violent crime rate is down over tha last few years.
Police response time to calls can be as long as 30 minutes. Our small township police department recently moved from a central location to a new building on the edge of the township for more space. I used to see patroling cars in our neighborhood, and have not seen one for months.

Our neighbor called the police several weeks ago when someone broke tha rear window on his van. They said they would not even come out because he had not seen the person who did it.

3. yup it can take the popo about 40 mins to get to my property,
and forget about it in the winter with snow, luckily i live in a neighbourhood were every household is armed and everybody knows it, so the crime rate is non existent outside of the usual family crap. Much safer than when i lived in the wonderful utopia of the DC SUBURBS.

4. Sounds like he's doing the best he can in a bad situation.
Statistically, concealed-carry licensees have a lower rate of committing violent crimes than do the police themselves, so arming people is a good way to reduce the immediate danger from the loss of police officers. If he could add say a small $10-$30 fee on top, and use the proceeds to keep a few more deputies, it would be nice but I suspect the county board would need to approve that.

5. CA should be a SHALL issue state anyway.

I'm glad the Sheriff is seeing the light.

13. Sorry if that came on strong, but its generally ok to have an opinion about another state's laws?

Is it not?

And yes, certain CA Senators and Representative have been doing their best to dictate my 2nd Amendment rights via Federal legislation.

15. That's how the Senate and House work. Read the Constitution.
As for internal matters of policy and implementation (like how concealed weapons permits get issued and to whom) states decide these things themselves, because that's how Federalism works. Again, this is basic civics.

16. Still, CA should be Shall Issue.

Whether you like it or not.

19. You could be correct, but perhaps this Sheriff is signalling a change.

Perhaps.

Feel free to IM me for any additional opinions. ;)

9. I don't know if you're a fucktard, but you clearly have reading comprehension issues.
Do YOU live in Sacramento County? No? Then mind your own damned business. People here don't want this.

10. What does reading comprehension have to do with your blanket statement?
No, I don't live in California where you took away the rights of a million people with a state proposition.
You couldn't pay me to live in that shithole.

12. I stated that Sacramento County does not need any more armed fucktards.
I've lived here all my life, I'm pretty sure I'd know if we had some sort of armed fucktard deficit, and we do not.

But I could be wrong.

11. Those super intelligent decisions you Californians' have been making
Got you into a $26,000,000,000 hole.

Do you wish to have nobody to have the means to stop armed criminals?

14. Alright, so they're hoping I save their day by some Boot Hill code of the west
Fuck it! What's next!? Now I have to sell their raffle tickets for them too :( I guess at this rate the upside is that before long there'll be no use for county sheriffs, maybe that's where those mega blue-light savings really are :)

20. Looks like Sacramento County Needs all the help it can get.

Average response time for a Crime in progress or Life-threatening situation (the highest priority, and there for the fasest response)is a whopping 15 minutes and 20 seconds.

On top of that, they only solve 14% of the crimes that do occur.

And that's before the cuts

How much worse is it going to get?
