RE: Twitter. Epic Fail: #NoMaintenance
I know nothing about Twitter, but I know there are some fans here, so if you're wondering, or want to check it out...

Epic Fail: #NoMaintenance
By Spencer Ackerman 6/15/09 5:33 PM

You should really check out the #iranelection hashtag on Twitter right now, because it’s an avalanche of protest against Twitter for performing a scheduled site maintenance at 9:45 Pacific time tonight, which will require one of the service interruptions that Twitter is known worldwide for experiencing right as you’ve dashed off your latest 140-character mot juste. The fear is that the maintenance work will effectively shut down the most reliable social-network for coordination and communication amongst the Iranian opposition and with the outside world. Twitter is pleading that it can’t do anything about the scheduled maintenance, but lots of people are tweeting @Twitter with the hashtag #NoMaintenance and #TwitterStayUp.

1. This is a disaster
All those random thoughts that people have will have to wait 90 minutes before being expressed. Oh, the humanity!

3. If this is the only way the Iranians can communicate to the outside
world, I'm sure they do think it's a disaster.

4. I don't think 90 minutes is going to make that much of a difference

10. I hope you're watching Rachel Maddow. The Iranians need twitter
more than we do for strategic purposes.

Richard Engel is on, and he just left Iran.

2. I think the world will survive a 90 minute maintenance shutdown
now if they have issues when they come back online, then we'll know something fishy is up

5. Sister, Twitter is saying they have no control
that it's their provider, but I believe they could ask their provider to postpone for awhile.

Sully posted this earlier:
Do your bit to prevent Twitter going down for maintenance tonight. The email is support@twitter.com. Be polite.

6. Funny, I was just told it's no big deal. Yet Sully and Ackerman
are concerned.

I don't use it, so it doesn't affect me either way, but I know some good info has been educating us via twitter the past few days.

8. Well, if they don't there's a good chance their database will fall over
For technical reasons (to do with message numbering) they were doing some significant changes just before this thing started in Iran.

7. Twitter is helping and hurting re: Iran...
Edited on Mon Jun-15-09 05:22 PM by targetpractice
At first, Twitter was providing insight from people on the ground... Much of the coordination of protests can be attributed to Twitter. Unfortunately, now the Iranian gov is now watching #iranelection and tracking and threatening users posting from Tehran. The govt is now aware of the proxy server information that has been shared via #iranelection.

I hope that Twitter does not help Iranian authorities to identify user accounts, but I can see some posters have been indiscreet with their posts and it's easy to find their real names.

9. it's a frenzy.
maybe they need to stop it now, I'm pretty sure the people at twitter are on to their concern.

the multiple posts can't be helping, can they?

is there a chance that it will make matters worse, all these messages and calls into the organization?
