ENSIGN DEFENDS SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE ON SENATE FLOOR

Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign took to the floor of the United States Senate today to defend the sanctity of marriage and urge passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment Act.

“Marriage recognizes the ideal of a father and mother living together to raise their children,” Ensign said. “Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation. Marriage, as a social institution, predates every other institution on which ordered society in America has relied.”

I think the larger issue is the lying in his personal life and his treatment of the people close to him.

I realize the adolescent delight in contradiction is sometimes irresistible, but confess I am as disappointed in this Senator's behavior as I was with President Clinton's. I think both cases should serve to reinforce the gravity of the marriage promise and those who struggle for that right when it is finally gained should remember these poor examples.

When I am finally able to marry my partner I would hope that the right so newly gained would not be the butt of a cocktail party hypocrisy jokes when the first tales of "frail partners" emerge among married same sex couples.

Why should anyone believe we would desperately want what we appear to esteem so lightly? People aren't "frail" they are dishonest, selfish, and hurtful and we do them no favors when we relieve them of responsibilities for their actions.
