Bush's Surge Will Call For Up to 50K Additional Troops (and maybe more)
From various sources. Just as a reminder - Bush wasn't truthful (imagine that) with the people about the 21,500 number.

February 2, 2007

"Bush announced last month that he was dispatching the additional Army and Marine Corps personnel and said it would cost no more than $7 billion this year.

President Bush's plan to send 21,500 more combat troops to Iraq might require as many as 28,000 additional troops to provide critical support during the deployment, making the "surge" in US military forces far larger than previously predicted, a government assessment concluded yesterday."

Feb 2, 2007

"A new congressional report says the increase of 21,500 combat troops for Iraq proposed by the Bush administration could result in up to 50,000 troops actually being deployed to the region.

The report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office bases that projection on the fact that the Bush plan is unclear about whether the 21,500 troops needed to quell violence are all combat troops or if that number already includes support forces"

Feb 1, 2007

"“An average of 170,000 military personnel has been maintained in the Iraq theater of operations, and this high deployment level has taken a toll. Last year, CBO reported that the Department of Defense had reduced the amount of ‘dwell’ time for many troops from two years to one year in order to sustain troop levels. ‘Dwell’ time is the time troops spend in training at bases in the United States while living with their families. CBO questioned whether such a high pace of operations was sustainable over the long term. The President’s proposal will increase this level to above 200,000 troops, and to reach this level, the Pentagon will probably have to relax ‘dwell’ time standards even more.

“CBO’s report concludes that the cost of the President’s plan to ‘surge’ troops will be higher than previously indicated, both in dollar terms and in the burdens it places on our military.”"

February 2, 2007

"The president specifically said he would dispatch 21,500 more combat troops from the Army and Marine Corps to Iraq in coming months.

(BUT)

The Pentagon will need to send as many as 48,000 troops to Iraq to implement President Bush's new Iraq strategy(the "surge"), at an estimated cost of $20 billion to $27 billion for a year-long deployment, according to a Congressional Budget Office analysis released Thursday. "

January 11, 2007 - Bush commits 21,500 more troops

1. kicking
This has gotten very little attention on the 'news'

They also conveniently forget to mention the 120,000 'contractors' in Iraq

2. That pretty much clarifies Bush's intentions of escalating the war
...well past the end of his term in January 2009. He wants the fighting to not end!

8. The more troops, the longer the war,
the more greedy profits for his cronies. It is despicable that so much money is being made by Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater, when so many of our young are being sent to die or come home wounded.

Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 06:32 AM by Solly Mack
I've read before that a good 90-95 percent of the NG have deployed over the last few years at one time or another to various places...now he'll get the rest and keep sending the other.

At least Blackwater has something to offer. ($$$)

Joining a merc organization these days has a future.

Mercs.

Certainly not are armed forces. They are covered under the DOD budget I would think.

14. He's gonna force them back sooner, cull from the NG/R, take injured troops
off the non-deployable list and deploy them, shorten training time, shorten down time, extend deployments, privatize certain military jobs so the military holding those jobs can deploy( assorted mid-range(NCO) jobs that deal with home based security)and expand stop loss

and mercs

and he will, just to prove he can - regardless of how many die because of it

13. That bastard's tongue is BEYOND forked.
Dennis Kucinich is now asking whether it's time to consider IMPEACHING the pResident. I certainly think so. What a LIAR. HOW many of our loved ones is he gonna feed into that meatgrinder over there??? I think IMPEACHING and REMOVAL FROM OFFICE is probably the only step remaining to stop him. And I'm gonna keep on nagging my reps about it.

how do you know bush is lying? His lips are moving. No joke, really, though.
