In September, we can have a TV News show from progressives...
...if enough of us donate.

I just gave $50 to "Independent World Television."

Naomi Klein is one of the supporters of IWT.

The idea is to get funding from donations instead of ads.

"250,000 people, at ten dollars a month, and we'll have a daily hour news show for television, and a full fledged 24/7 news website." – Paul Jay, CEO and Senior Editor of The Real News
http://www.therealnews.com/web/index.php

The Real News will launch a worldwide independent news network on this website.

The Real News will investigate, report and debate stories that help us understand the critical issues of our time.

We will combine breaking-news footage from around the world with reportage from some of the world's best journalists, expanding from several news items per day to a 24/7 news website and daily news hour for television.

For more on the future of The Real News we invite you to watch Frequently Asked Questions – an interview with CEO, Paul Jay.

5. Names.
"Independent World Television" is the name of the news network.

"The Real News" is the name of their planned daily one-hour main show.

(For a while, they were calling the news network "The Real News," but then went back to IWT as the name of the news network.)

7. hmmm
sorry I can't back this. I think the truth supercedes any political agenda and I am skeptical that a solely progressive news source would be objective. What if Dennis Kucinich gets involved in some crazy meth-induced sex scandal? Would IWT report it? Probably not, or at least they would skew the news a little to lessen the blow to their viewers (ie revenue stream). If a democrat does something illegal I want to know the truth, I don't want it glossed over or not reported at all.

It would be Fox News for progressives or at the very least over time it would turn into that.

If you want to support news programs that are not dependant on advertisers, which I think is a worthy cause, than donate to NPR.

8. It's basically a giant news co-op that's funded by viewers instead of corporations.
Of course, this means you have to pay, but that's the trade-off between this and a corporate news outlet that must yield to potential corporate customers looking to buy advertising space who do not want news critical of corporations or threatening to profit margins being reported.
