Ann Curry Calls the Media Out....
Ann Curry said that mainstream media is not "covering the world enough" and that she turns to Twitter to "make sure that anything I can't get on TV I get out there."

The New York Observer's Gillian Reagan reports that Curry spoke at the 140 Character Conference Tuesday alongside Rick Sanchez, Robert Scoble, and Ryan Osborn — a producer of NBC's Today Show, which Curry anchors — on the "Twitter as a News-Gathering tool" panel.

"The reason I have to fight every time to do these stories is because the truth is that it's hard to get the majority of Americans or even a significant number of Americans in NBC, Fox, ABC, CBS's world, to care," she said. "I think journalism is a battle and I feel the scars and I see the blood on my sword on a daily basis for fights for foreign coverage to be more present in our broadcasting."

Curry's passionate words left conference attendees tweeting her praises.

10. I'm tired of people saying americans don't care. give us the truth
and we will show you who cares. Obama's election is proof of people caring and doing something about it.

12. I believe she's referring to the corporate media's world, not Americans in general.

If that's what she is referring to, I agree.

My own belief is, the corporate media has great power in influencing what the American People believe to be important. The corporate media in that sense is a self-fulfilling prophecy, a primitive Matrix of sorts.

If profit is all that matters to the corporate media; and to this point that seems largely to be the case, they will continue to focus the Lion's share of their efforts on dumbing down the American People, in an attempt to create a nation of brain dead consumers all for the benefit of their corporate commercial buying clients. I also believe that will be the eventual undoing of the corporate media but much damage will be done to the nation in the meantime.

If the corporate media seriously wants to save it self, they must come clean regarding the state of the nation and the world at large, they must challenge one another on mis-leading propaganda instead of giving slander, libel and cheap shots a pass, and they must work to enlighten and lift up the people, instead of tearing the people down.

To be honest my opinion of the corporate media as an institution is very low, but I do like Ann Curry, she seems to take her job seriously traveling the world over and I believe she could be a great journalist if given the opportunity and support, this may also require a better setting or different environ.

3. And as soon as the red light goes on . . .
Ann reverts to her "Good morning, good morning, good morning" self, reads whatever's put in front of her, and picks up her hefty paycheck off the top of Jack Welch's dresser. Moughty brave words spoken to an audience of people who can't do a thing about her situation. And they probably paid her for the "honor."

4. Why do I get the sense that this business is gonna end up with her apologizing to Limbaugh?
Look, I agree that the network news organizations don't cover enough international news. But is she really saying the solution is more twittering?

7. It's mind boggling isn't it?
Once and a very rare while, I'll tune in.

And it drives me nuts how during every segment there is this rushed breathlessness to get through the interview, presentation, etc.

Makes you realize that the Today show is just filler in between the advertisements.

I feel the same way about cable news, too.

Ferchrissakes, people! You've got hours upon hours to fill up. Can we relax a bit?

6. IIRC, wasn't Ashleigh Banfiled working for NBC when she had the same criticism?
Watch out, Ann.

And on that note, I'm seriously starting to take all of this Twitter promotion with a grain of salt. Oprah seem to want me to Twitter. Same with CNN.

There seems to be a growing chorus of very rich folks telling me that I need to Twitter or I'm going to be out of the loop.

It's a public company, right? Makes you wonder who the shareholders are?

And to end, I don't Twitter and I have little doubt that I'm probably more informed than 98% of it's users.

Do I think it could be helpful during an earthquake, etc.? Sure, I do.

But if we're going to start relying on 140 character uncorroborated, unedited and little researched missives to inform and educate us, we are in for a world of trouble.

8. DId she say all this in her pseudo serious voice?
That tone she affects when she wants to convey that some particular news item is sad, tragic, or contains some human interest element.

She's a phony.

11. The MSM is that way by design
Who does she think she is working for? People in this country are raised to serve corporate greed and that is all. They have no interest in having an educated populace - it would defeat their purpose. Every once in a while journalists will wring their hands about such things as if to prove that they have a higher purpose - they don't. I'm sure Ms. Curry won't be turning down that hefty paycheck anytime soon.
