AG Holder: 50 or more Gitmo trials possible

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday there may be 50 or more trials of Guantanamo Bay detainees as the Obama administration works to shut the detention center by early next year.

Holder discussed the plan before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where the senior Republican called him "too silent" on terrorism while a second GOP lawmaker said he was on the right track in handling detainees.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., criticized Holder for the release of Bush administration memos that authorized harsh interrogation techniques. Sessions said the memos gave important information to America's enemies.

Holder told senators protecting Americans from terrorists is his top priority.

1. Upholding the law should be his highest priority
Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither.

2. On what charges?
What can you possibly charge someone with, in a US court of law, when we literally had to go as far as you can be from US jurisdiction and still be on the planet Earth to capture these people?

3. Trials mean lawyers. They get their day in court. And freedom, or not. nt

4. What good is a lawyer, or a court
if there's no law on which they can act?

What US laws, exactly, apply to an Afghani tribal in Afghanistan?

5. These detainees have been denied trials. I will just bet some of
them might be innocent. And if not, we'll find out. We will see what they've been held on for so many years, and why they were in Gitmo to begin with.

I don't know what you mean by an Afghani tribal.

6. You can't have a trial without a charge
What I'm saying is that there's no point in a trial for someone who couldn't possibly have broken US laws, being as far outside of US jurisdiction as one could be.

What these people are effectively are POWs, not suspected criminals.
